Before I start, I have used to the search facility because I am aware of these kind of topics have been discussed countless times, but unfortunately it isn't working correctly! frown

Planning a trip to the Ring in May, but I am not sure how to go about booking things etc. Should I book the track day(s) in advance or can you pay on arrival? Which website should I use to book/check dates etc because there seems to be quite a few.

Cheers

Are you doing a public day (called a touristfahrten) or a proper track day? If the latter you should book in advance - if the former you can buy the lap tickets when you arrive.

If a track day you should check the terms/conditions - do you need to bring driving license, are you allowed slicks etc, and do you need any form of insurance (mostly you don't for a track day).

For public day you should check the calendar to know when they are on, but also check your insurance as you need to be legal.

Check out this website it will tell you all you need to know, but basically on a TF day just turn up and do it.

Official website: TF opening times

However, even these are a little bit subject to change, but should be fairly reliable from two weeks out.

I'm kind of assuming you are going for a TF day or days (rather than a track day), and as above you can buy lap tickets (in units of 1, 4, 15 or 25) for public laps on the day.

However, if you haven't already, you certainly should book accommodation in advance.

Try here..stayed there last year and staying there again this May (w/end of the 21/22nd) a bit basic but very good and reasonable too, I understand it has had a winter refurb as well.
ps...there are still vacancies during may also

Check these explanatory videos out before you go.

http://vimeo.com/channels/nordschleife

Your car must be street legal and have uk insurance
You must drive on the right and overtake on the left
Most people will be quicker than you some massively quicker - watch your mirrors
You wont remember the track/bends until you have done 30+ laps
Check hoses, fluid levels and tyre pressures before you go on track
Video cameras not allowed on tourist days unless rented from the track

You will pay for all damage to barriers
you will pay if you cause the track to be closed
you will pay for a recovery lorry
you will pay if your car causes an accident through fluid spillage

You will most likely NOT be covered for any of this (or your car or 3rd party liability) by your UK insurance company unless on an authorised track day.

The opening times for touristfahten are here on the official site.

That's our plan too - few laps on the Saturday night and then again on the Sunday.

We'll be in a silver and black-roofed MR2 turbo.

What else is there to do close to the Ring? Anything else worth checking out?

Agreed - travel via Lille - Mons - Liege and Spa (this avoids the Brussels equivalent of the M25) which gives a great run through the countryside with its roads like Nurburgring.

Stayed at the Ringhaus too, right near the circuit and although the rooms are fairly simple what more do you need ? The staff were very friendly and looked after my father and me brilliantly.

There is also a museum at the Nurburgring main track thats worth a visit.

Drive out through Adenau North, and go to the Rodelbahn. Brilliant fun, especially with a few of you.

I'm guessing E30 320i or 325i, epic fail though.

One of my goals is to get out to do a real life lap of the Ring, I've done well over 2000 laps on Gran Turismo 4/5. I know it's nothing like real life but it will give me a good knowledge of where all the bends go.
