My girlfriend's father has kindly offered to look after my Mk1 MX5, and take it out for a spin every so often whilst I'm working abroad.

Unfortunatley because the car is a Japanese import and he is 84, the specialist insurance companies are giving us ridiculous quotes for a 3000 mile limited policy. I'm currently with Fooman James (the MX5oc insurer) and they won't even cover him.

Background - Me as principal (33 yo, 8 years no claims. 2 cars) Ron as named driver. Car garaged in rural Derbyshire.

Adrian Flux want 20p a mile to insure us! Any suggestions?

Wouldn't he be the main driver? <pedant>

No - I'll be doing most of the miles, during visits home. He'll just take it round the block every couple of weeks.

Can you change your policy to include 3rd party insurance for any drivers? If he's just taking it round the block it should be fine.

Has he got his own FC policy? I take it some 84 year old chap won't be hooning around the lanes - therefore 3rd part cover should be sufficient?

Plan B was for him to use the 3rd party cover on the Saab 95 they have. Unfortunately the car is in his wife's name and he's a named driver - hence doesn't include him frown

Could the wife drive it instead then?
