E36 and flashable ECUs

Can anyone give a definitive manufacturing date at which point E36 ECUs became readable and write-toable? i.e. they can be mapped rather than having to be physically changed.

Additionally, I'm pretty sure that this date didn't coincide with the move from ODB1 to ODB-II ports (I think this advance was later) but would like this confirmed too.

E36s didn't get OBD2.

The switch was in '95 IIRC - exact month escapes me, but have a feeling it might have been Dec.
