Gave it some beans from first to second and immediately heard what can only be described as an intermittent rattle from the engine area, the rattle is with the engine revs and starts at about 1800rpm until god knows where as I daren't drive it.
Idle sounds fine.
Just had a full rebuild at power in feb

Is there anything simple this could be or is it a back to power job?

Gutted only had it 2 daysfrown

Might be something simple like loose timing chain.

TBH they are noisy engines. I have given up worrying about mine. Dom says its fine so unless it makes any new loud noises or feels down on power then I will work on the basis that all is well

It does sound like it could be the chain, it's a metal on metal sound if you know what I mean.

Could it be done myself or does it have to go to power?

I'd give Dom a ring, but as previously said they are noisy. Mine makes all kinds of sounds and I still worry, but it hasn't had a rebuild and I have a new head to go on. Hard to diagnose without hearing it, but there are plenty of things that can rattle around. Could whip the bonnet off and have a look, trouble is you need a reference.

Any one in Essex help this fella?

Could also try the TVR car club if you are member.

Just thinking about it and the noise is like when you stick a lolly pop stick in a bike spokes biglaugh

What worries me is that may be the tappets/followers, i'm not sure if its down on power as obviously i haven't tried to drive it hard.

No noise on ticker? Has the oil pressure changed at all?

Is it he first time since you drove her with the roof off?
Had then the same worries as the lolly pop story.

Other explanation : Your neighbour's car vodoo?

well i did notice the oil pressure seemed very low on idle, about 3-6 psi iirc but i cant be 100% on that.

I cant remember what it was when running but i think it seemed about normal with other readings ive been seeing.

edit
Actually i'm sure it was around 3-6psi on idle, ithought it seemed low. Just checked the mytuscan site and it says idle when warm should be between 9-12psi which is im sure what it usually is.

Just checked another webite and its saying that a light knocking under load indicates con rod bearings frown

Surely that can't be the case, it was rebuilt under 1500 miles ago.

A long wait now until tuesday when i can call dom frown

Its definately a nasty noise that just appeared too, my ears are pretty good and i appreciate the engine is quite noisy anyway but this noise is not nice.

Best wait for Dom,
or get another local expert opinion before you start engine again.

From what you describe I would suggest it maybe a tappet shim that's dislodged or a broken valve spring.

Might just be new owner paranoia, I find myself listening to every little noise mine makes but as already said they are noisy engines. I drove 3 before I bought mine including one within 700 miles of a rebuild and all sounded very noisy/rattly, obviously less noticeable at higher revs with exhaust note. One owner actually said you just have to get used to them sounding like a sewing machine..

did you check the oil level? I would suggest a call to Dom to check all well.

Yes oil level was fine when checked and theres no leaks at all under the car so thats one good thing.

I'm hoping dom says i can drive it to him as like mentioned the noise is around 2k rpm so i could limp it up there, otherwise getting it trailered will be a nightmare, i do have green flag cover but pretty sure they wont do it as the cars still technically working.

Not if you removed the correct fuse its not..... #27/29 should do the trick. Replace it with a blown fuse. Green flag won't have a clue where to start as I doubt they have fuse box diagrams for a TVR.

Rebuilt less than 1500 miles ago you say .. ? How many less ? And have you had the post rebuild service done ? should either be at 1000 or 1500... Either way as far as i know you shouldnt be flooring it through first and second (per Dom's recomenndations) until this has been done wink

The day i picked it up it had had its post build service. Steve darville did this and is approved by power.

I was told it was run in.

Just to add too that i wasn't really giving it 'death' just normal acceleration through those gears. I only got it thursday so i'm still getting used to it tbh

Just checked some stuff in the enclosed recepits and it had the running in rebuild a couple of weeks ago. The day i picked it up he had done the suspension for me (guy who oiwned only did the rears so i got the fronts done too). so that confirms running in service definately done by steve darville.

Anyway, i spoke to Dom today and he seems a nice bloke, he said it could be a variety of things, some covered by warrenty and some not frown He has said though that damage shouldnt occur and not to worry as his exact words were 'your not going to get your arse slapped' smile so thats one good thing.

I think its also promising that the noise is not at idle. He mentioned it could be something as simple an alternator bearing going as that would make the noise i describe, he also said worst case would be the cat has gone and been sucked into the engine, though i doubt this as i spoke to a mechanic i know who said the noise would be totally different to what i have described, more along the lines of splinters flying round the engine, i would also imagine fault codes coming up along with a different exhaust note.

Anyway its going thursday and i just hope its gets sorted quickly, i was just starting to get used to it and was just starting to love the actual go kart type handling smile
