What fuel consumption should you expect from a Focus diesel?
Discussion
Had a drive in a friends Focus diesel today.
59reg
1.6 5 speed
26,000 miles
I reset the 'Average Consumption' part of the trip meter and put 45 miles on the clock. We didn't breach 2,250rpm when accelerating (trpically changing up around 2,000rpm) and max speed was 60mph down the dual carriageway. Bit of urban. Zero harsh acceleration.
Come home time, the comupter said 40.9mpg average. I thought that that was pretty mediocre? Am I being harsh?
My daily is a 'Triggers Broom' of an old Scirocco that I've fitted a 1.6 n/a diesel to from a Mk2 Golf. It packs a full stable of 54 horses in their prime and I get 52mpg winter and 54mpg summer under exactly the same use. I can eek it to 60mpg on the motorway.
Are modern diesel mapped for passing economy trials at the expense of driveability and economy? There's no way in the world it'll pull from walking pace in 2nd gear for example whereas my Scirocco just goes without fuss under such circumstances.
To be honest, I'm sure I could have done better than 41mpg over that route today in the Elise.

I recently had a passat blue motion for a week and covered 500 miles in it, it did 45mpg. The passat blue motion is a full 105ps of power and supposedly 116 g co2 wotsits.
My 120d has 177bhp, is 129 co2 wotsits but does 49-52 mpg week in week out on the same route.
I know the measure of mpg is a set test, but it seems some manufacturers maybe play to the test more than others

I ran a MkII Focus 1.6TDCI for a while whilst waiting for my CC to come through.
It was absolutely shocking on fuel - I was getting 38mpg over a full tank - and this was calculated, not taken from the dash - which claimed nearly 41mpg.
To put it into perspective, I was getting around 44mpg from a Passat TDI-140 and currently about the same from a Passat TDI-170.
The Focus was incredibly thirsty for such poor performance.

I've got a MK1 53-plate Focus 1.8 TDCI. When I stopped monitoring it at each fill up after 2 years of ownership I had averaged 45.5mpg and covered about 45k miles. Last tankful bought this week was just over 50mpg. I've had it for nearly 3 years now.
Not that exciting a car, but good at what it does.

The BMW is also about half the size of a Passat, so you can't really draw too many comparisons! My 120d has 177bhp, is 129 co2 wotsits but does 49-52 mpg week in week out on the same route.

Volvo V70 tdi auto gearbox, almost 200k miles, 38mpg in the lanes to/from work, 45 if I include the odd bit of motorway or 55mpg on a motorway run. (Over 60 if I play the mpg game and stay below 60mph) This is the V70 with the old 5cyl VW van engine which was and possibly still is fitted to the VW Transporter and early A6, not the D5. All it gets is an oil change each year and an air filter if I remember. And these mpg figures are on Nokian WRG2 winter tyres still . . . they've got to come off asap.

My 2.0 TDCi Focus is averaging 46.2mpg over the last 12 months. Nothing like as good as I imagined tbh, but still more economical than my old Octy vRS.
Mine's a CMAX, 2.0 TDCi. Mix of motorway driving and around town covering around 2000 miles or so in the last month. Motorway miles show around 65 mpg, late 30's early 40's around town. This is according to the onboard computer, and I've worked out that overreads around 6-8 mpgInteresting that when I changed the steering response from sport to standard I got an increase of a few mpg according to the computer and at the pump for roughly the same journeys, just seems to be more econmical. Or I'm driving it less like an angry dad, one of the two

That's interesting about the steering settings. As soon as I discovered that feature, it was left on "Sport"!Interesting that when I changed the steering response from sport to standard I got an increase of a few mpg according to the computer and at the pump for roughly the same journeys, just seems to be more econmical. My mpg is a calculated figure based on fill-ups and mileage covered by each tankful. The trip is pretty spot on though.
I had a Focus 1.6 tdci as a stop gap, the 110hp version.
Averaged around 53mpg from a tank, dropping to 47mpg in the winter. Was always over 500 miles to a (small) tank, that was filling up with showing 70/80 miles remaining.
To make it economical you had to be on the turbo, changing at 2000rpm the turbo is hardly spinning and the cars struggling.. Using a light foot on boost gave best economy.
