Considering a 2.0tdi Golf and am vaguely aware of a 4Motion version; is it full time 4wd or a Haldex?

If only you'd told this to the previous owner of my car, bought it at 40k without the system ever being touched!

Depends what gen of Haldex it is. Earlier ones used on MK4 Golf are 20k intervals for oil and 40k for filter whereas the later ones used on MKV Golf R32 are 40k miles for oil and filter.

Shame; will probably just go for the front wheel drive and amuse myself with the torque steer.

That's good point. I'm changing the oil and filter every 20k as my S3 is over 10 years old.

For a few ££ extra at it's time of life, it may help it through it's middle age hehe

Correct, VW dropped it after this owing to poor sales.

I understand there was a TDI 4-motion Leon also (never sold in the UK).

We get a rough deal over here, in Europe you can also buy Leons with 2.8 VR6 + 4motion set up. I guess until the last couple of years when we have had piddly amounts of snow there has never been the demand for 4x4 hatchbacks. Aside from the S3/R32/Scooby WRX/Evos are there any other 4x4 hatches?

Octavia 1.8 20v Turbo 4x4 & Octavia 1.9 TDI 4x4 ( Golf Mk.4 ) and Mk.5 Golf platform versions too

Audi A3 Quattros (1.8T,1.9TDI,3.2)

None of the Golf or Bora 1.8T 4Motions where ever release in the UK
Nor where the any of the saloon/estate Bora 1.9TDI 4motions

I know the Leon4 came with both 1.8T and 1.9TDI options
Its possible there there Toledo versions too

I used to have a Mazda 323 that had a 1.6 turbo engine in it with full time 4WD that was great fun to drive.

Before you write off haldex, try it.

The new Lamborghini Aventador must be rubbish too, also uses a haldex wink

Fairly sure all (the Leon and Octy certainly are) on that platform with haldex also have independant wishbone rear suspension also, as opposed to the torsion beam on the FWD models.

If you believe everything you read about haldex, you'd think the front wheels spin for 10 seconds before it wakes up. It's quick to react (yes you can get the tail out with enough power / not enough grip) and yet will achieve much better MPG than a Torsen setup.

My 4-mo would do four wheel drifts no problem but the fuel comsumption was terrible.
