Right folks, planning a wee road trip this summer with the Mrs, soon to be wife, we got to the stage where we look between Venice and Florence. Is there anything worth seeing in between or should we blitz it and have more time in Florence/Siena? Cheers

You don't have far to drive and it should take you no more than 3 hours door to door, however you will be going past Bologna which is worth a visit and Ferrari is not far away either. Other than that, I would get over the hills to Florence and enjoy.

Are you really a member of Pistonheads?

Modena is equidistance between Venice and Florence wink

Ok ok, thanks guys, Modena is planned for the way back, how about the coast? Is there anything worth stoping for or going that way rather than inland via Bologna?

Depends which route. We always have to go by Fidenza village and Barbarino di Mugello...
Ducati, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Pagani factories are in the rough area as is Imola and Mugello circuits.

Not sure about between, but be aware that Fiesole (a couple of miles outside Florence, overlooking it) is a much nicer place to stay.

Also, you'll see the very best of Florence at 6am for an hour or two if you're lucky. As soon as things start opening, the tour groups arrive and it's manic.

+1 for avoiding Florence in the summer, it's absolutely rammed. And don't even think about San Giminiano.

Even last week when we were there, Siena was pretty busy also. If you are in that part of the world, and fancy a day trip out of Florence, I'd also recommend Lucca.

+1 for Lucca but drive cross country south from Maranello through Abetone.

It a very scenic drive and much more relaxing than the chicane of tunnels from Bologna to Florence taking the Autostrada route.

Agreed, over the hills from Maranello to Lucca is lovely. If possible take the train into Firenze. We stay near to Certaldo and take the train even though its onl 40k's or so. Firenze traffic is a nightmare in summer.

I would recommend you check out Treviso. It's not far from Venice and not out of your way.

This great website offers routes and different types of sightseeing themes
