Mercedes S600 V12 Bi Turbo 2003 Engine Needed HELP!!!
Discussion
Hi I am the owner of a Mercedes S600 V12 Bi-Turbo car and the engine has died.
Mercedes Brooklands are unsure as to why this is and to find out will charge me around 3k to investigate.
I have taken it to a specilist and they have taken off the coil packs and removed the plugs to find that there are deep scratch marks on the bores and a bottom end knock.
They have told me that its time to replace the engine and I cant find one.
Can anybody help - this is the best car in the world and I have to fix it.
Many thanks James

Dont really see a problem with rebuilding, other than the fact it will cost a fortune.
But then, I imagine a replacement engine will also cost a fortune ?
However...and I know you are conveying third hand information. But the description of the damage is vague to a degree.
How did they see the scores ? Did they use a bore scope ? And what exactly does a bottom end knock mean ?
And when you say the engine has died. Did it stop, seize ? is it still running ? off cylinders ?
And I know it's a longshot...but have you priced a replacement short motor from Mercedes ?
Sometimes random parts like that dont cost as much as you'd expect.
And is the "specialist" you took it to a specialist in performance engines/tuning/diagnostics, or just one that works on Mercedes cars ?
The two will be very different and have very different skills and abilities. Often one marque specialists are great for general day to day work. But they dont always actually delve inside engines etc.
In fact, many might never have rebuilt an engine in their lives.

Hi Steve,
Thank you for your reply, I am 28 and trained as a Motor Mechanic 15 years ago and I thought the same with rebuilding, After all its Mechanical and things can be replaced.
A replacement engine will cost £49,160 from Merc and they want £14k to fit it due to the engine being a basic block, heads valves pullys etc. but no turbos suspention, stering and water pumps etc.
A block is £9k and the heads are £2.5k each obv 2 required bare of all valves and everything.
I am conveying third hand information which I agree is vague. Mercedes Basicly said they changed the oil which was like trecale (was due for service however) and ran the engine which ran fine until it warmed up then started to knock on what they said was the bottom end (im guessing crank). I noticed it was using coolent and they have confimed its not heads and sure its not a cracked block - to find out more they would have to remove the engine and run it on a support machine out of the car.... cost 3k and told me I could get a create engine for 4k from a breaker.
How did they see the scores - they did use a bore scope and show me on a tv screen they look like scortch marks (he only showed me one bore).
When i say the engine has died - it basicly lost coolent then died at the slip road as i was braking I dont believe its seized as when cold and full of water it runs fine but been told it would damage it.
A friend of mine works for Maclaren Mercedes and pointed me to a specialist in performance engines/tuning before he saw the car and told me 'engine' he said he may beable to put better pistons etc in the engine and save it.
I have found that Mercedes themselves here in the UK are not trained in this engine and I fear that it may of been neglected by them - brooklands have looked after my car for three years as the Maybach uses the same engine and Birmingham Mercedes failed to fix it after being with them for 11 months and i ended up having to sue the dealer... its just a great great shame - they build the best car in the world and charge £150k for it and yet when it goes wrong your left twisting in the wind.

You really need to get a proper diagnosis done and take it from there.
One way or another any engine can be rebuilt.
And I dont see how losing a bit of water could lead to any bearings failing.
But either way, it is just an engine albeit one with loads of parts.
If you dont have the ability and room to tackle it yourself, you need to locate someone who can. But until you have the actual problem diagnosed you can go nowhere.

Hi Max, Its not really about the money - an S600 is fairly rare but there is only 6 of mine in the world - they were specially made for the Directors of Daimler and mine is the only RHD one. Im trying to locate an engine or help in repair hence the post as its now been 15 weeks since it was recovered.
I can't see it being that difficult to strip down and rebuild, certainly not at the prices tag they're asking, that's ridiculous! It could be rebuilt with custom pistons for less then that! As for the bore scope, that won't accurately show how bad any scratches in the bores may be. I'd want a better diagnosis then this and a proper strip down to view the parts and then decide a way forwards.

Rollcage - i did buy it and run it for 5 years 27k in fuel last year alone...
Pull the other one mate!(£27k at say £1.25 a litre = 21600litres = 4758gallons, so say 10mpg worst case = 47,500 miles last year??? i don't think so.......)
If you're so rich, why don't you just buy another car??
Something smells here ;-(
Ok ready brought the car in 2007 with 63,000 miles went wrong march 18th 2008 74,000 miles got it back feb 14th 2009 sued the dealer and it went broke down January 2011 its been serviced 10.000 miles 5,000 miles per month x 24 = 120,000 miles = 194,000 miles @ about 16 mpg please never send me a CV
