Bit of a longshot but got a problem with my Merc sprinter. It's an 08 with 140k miles, starts fine first thing in the morning but once I've driven about 10 miles it won't start once I've stopped it - turns over but won't fire up. If I wait 10-15 mins it'll start and then be fine for the rest of the day (starting 70-80 times!) starting first go, although turns over a few times before firing up. Next morning the same thing will happen. If I'm on a slope I can bump it.

It's been into the dealer and isn't showing up any faults, they can't find a problem with it but guess that it's the fuel pump. As it's £1200 fitted I don't want to do this until I know that's the problem!! On Thurs I was parked facing up on a steep hill and it would not start, had to get recovery out after trying to start it for an hour, started fine once it was back at the garage furious

Fuel filter, pump relay and key battery has been changed so not those. Any ideas on what might be causing this, really need it fixed but can't risk £1200 on a hunch...

If you are facing up on a steep hill, you can just bump it in reverse.

Not a fix, but it might help in that same scenario lol

Firstly you need to check fuel rail pressure whilst it is turning over and not starting, any modern diag scanner will do this. should be around 320 bar cranking. also look at crankshaft speed sensor readings.

If these are both ok get back to me on this site or email me at porka911t@aol.com with your number and ill will talk you through other issues with these vehicles.

Thanks for that porka911t, very helpful. I've got it booked in again at the dealers tomorrow and am hoping to replicate the starting problems when I'm there so they can plug it in and see what comes up. The fact that it's intermitent (although happens under the same scenario once a day) has got me puzzled. Actually today it has been slightly worse and has taken a couple of attempts to start sometimes.

Anyway, if I don't get any joy at the dealer tomorrow I'll be in touch.
