I'm in Scotland in two weeks time with the PCGB R27 / PCI trip and want to visit Oban and Islay ( Laphroaig ).Planning to stay on a day or two extra. How do I get to Islay ( cost/ distance/ time by ferry ) and where to stay please.

Personally, I would argue that a day or two is not enough to do justice to Islay (and Jura).
You mention Laphroaig so I guess whisky is part of why you want to go there - as with many visitors. It will be an expensive trip to see one distillery and a small part of the island.
We have stayed in a nice / adequate bungalow at Port Charlotte belonging to Sarah Roy - mother from the Roy's shop in Bowmore. Plenty of hotels etc for shorter stays though.

Yes it's whisky. Living in the South of Ireland it's a long long way away and I felt while I'm up there I might get a chance to see the distilleries in person. I enjoy both Oban and Laphroaig. The ferry to Jura/Is;ay is off putting, maybe I should just settle for Oban. Yet, I'm afraid I might never get back, that's whats spurring me on. I noormally post on the Porsche Forum but like to drop in here and read the whisky/whiskey posts !

I stayed in a B&B in Lagavullin and managed to do the tours of Ardbeg, Lagavullin and Laphroaig in a day albeit with the assistance of the local (and only!) taxi driver - Fiona.
