I got a 10 plate, 400 miles Indy R R1 engined car about 4 weeks ago. Did around 150 miles on the road running it in a bit more etc etc. Had a great day at oulton park on Wednesday last week.

When I got back I realised I couldnt get neutral. Spoken to Malc at Yorkshire Engines, who supplied the engine when the car was built in 2010, and its going in next week.

My question is really about the reliability of the r1 engine/gearbox. How robust is it? Is this issue likely to be a one off or is it intrinsic to this engine?

Basically am I likely to be looking at repairs, even a rebuild, after every track day? I cant imagine that to be the case as they are commonly used.

I would say I used the car to 80% of its capacity on the day.

Cheers

Well, first you need to know whether the problem is with the gearbox, or the gear linkage. Can you get the other gears? How about first?

THe R1 does have an excellent reputation in BEC form, so I'd stick with it if I were you.

Yeah I can get all forward gears, just not neutral. Electric reverse will only work in neutral.

I think it's probably the linkage as you said mate. Not sure how I can see if that's the case (if at all)? Think it needs to visit Malc at Yorkshire Engines.

What gear change are you using? Is it a lever, cables, electronic or air shifter?

Rod based stick shift (6 speed)

Unlikely to be the linkage then, had a similar problem a while back on mine (same set up and engine) when I let the oil get a bit old and hot. I'd change that first before spending money. Might be a simple "fix".

Good luck, hope you get it sorted.

I'd try disconnecting your linkage and see if you can select it using the control arm only. It doesn't take much effort to select gears. Is the clutch operating correctly as this will affect how easily you can select gears. Check the clutch cable linkage. Do you know what clutch is on the car? Has it been uprated?

Could have been hot as it was a trackday but the car has only done 5-600 miles. Having said that the car is about 6-7 months old.

Ill try the other things you guys suggest, cheers.
