Hi, my 1st visit here I think, so hope someone may be able to help
A friend has just been told that his discs need replacing all round. Three year old car, 72,000 miles.

Main dealer quoting £706 front. £468 rear, fitted.

Not having the faintest idea re these sort of costs, I said I would enquire here as to whether or not this sounds reasonable.

Or, if anyone knows a reliable indie in the Gravesend Kent surrounding area.

Many thanks

Di

Doesn't sound ridiculous as a dealer price, but who would want to pay that? wink

I can heartily recommend talking to Martin at Scott's Performance - top work, decent prices. He's fitting a clutch for me this week, so I'll happily put my money where my mouth is.

Considering its an hours work with proper tools, i find those prices nothing short of robbery.

I've recently paid £280 (fitted) for 2 x Bosch disks and pads on a 335d - the disks are pretty massive.

So those prices look very high.

Just paid £208 for discs and pads all round (Brembo). Got them from GSF and fitted them myself. If you can't do the labour yourself, you could always buy the parts and ask a garage to fit them. Just make sure you get the right size discs - the fronts come in two sizes........

...Or get a second opinion and you might find that the dealer has suggested a replacement long before it's due. rolleyes

I got a warning from VW in July 2009 about my rear disc/pads. An Indy garage said in September 2010 (2010!) that these same brakes were 'no more than 30-40% worn' - come back in at least a year.

Quite. Stealers, in my experience, are more than a little too happy to warn of brake wear waaaaaaaay in advance of safe limits.
Preventative maintenance is one thing, levering your wallet is another.

Phone a motor factors and get an idea of price they quote to supply. That will give you a better view of the dealer's price - don't forget to allow for the cost of the coffee you might get at the dealer while you wait biggrin

You might want to check with your friend again - there was never an E60 535i.

Do you mean 535d, or is the car older than 3 years?

That is unbelievable but people do pay those prices, mostly company cars at a guess. As said source a set from a motor Factor such as GSF or Euro car parts and pay a mobile mechanic a few quid to fit.

I just bought front and rear ATE disks and pads for my 535d from ECP for 530 less 30% = 370 using their now expired 30% discount code. But I think you can get at least 20% off. So 1174 fitted is a wee bit much.
