Can anyone advise me as to what could be up with my car?
Its smoking quite badly sometimes and im very worried about it. I cant work out what it is, its not doing it all the time and not just on over run, its not ticking over nicely from a cold start(hunting and stalling). But runs ok when hot but still smokes and smells rich. Also i can hear a ticking noise like a gasket blowing , but only when the car is under load so i cant hear it when i am stationary and raise the revs.
The car sounds sweet when stationary and reving it, no knocks or taps so what could it be?
Ive just had the cats removed could that be upseting the fuel mixture ect to make the smoke????
Any help appriciated

Likely is a turbo seal on the way out, but really need to know the colour of the smoke.
Put a bit of white card against the exhaust when it's doing it and you should get deposited what's coming out and you should be able to there tell if its soot, water vapour or oil deposits.
Ok i'll go and have a look, dont think its turbo's ive just changed them for recently refurbed one's as the old ones looked like they were leaking a bit of oil. I've have also changed the valve stem oil seals while the springs were being changed incase they were worn.Put a bit of white card against the exhaust when it's doing it and you should get deposited what's coming out and you should be able to there tell if its soot, water vapour or oil deposits.

Have you got an MBE ECU if so might be worth resetting adaptive map take it for a little run and see if that sorts the hunting/stalling out. May or may not have any effect on the smoke issue
HTH

Hi Worty, Ive got an omex and i'm not sure how to resetHTH

car is going for a remap on thurs so im sure any issues will come to light then but i'd rather not waste time an money if this is a serious problem.

is the engine using any oil ?
is it quite thirsty on fuel ?
a faulty temp sensor could make the car run rich
did you prime the new turbo's with oil before you started the engine ?
I havent done enough miles to notice using oilis it quite thirsty on fuel ?

it could be using a bit more fuel
i didnt prime the turbo's because i didnt remove/refit the engine, i let a garage do that part incase i did something wrong. But they didnt prime them although they weren't brand new, they were daddy sumo's old ones.

Things like this become more noticable when you remove the cats, the noise you mentioned, could it be coming from the exhaust?
I would look at the last things you have just changed, exhaust and turbos, i also recently got some refurbed turbos and i was getting some "white smoke", but not alot, and people told me it could be a turbo seal on its way out, but.. a good run cleaned out the cobwebs, i dropped a rubber seal into the engine and i think it stopped a valve from seating properly for a while, but it soon got burned off
, lol, its running great now, pulling very very hard and the smoke has gone.
It may need tuning, not sure if i will explain this correctly, but when you have a restriction on the exhaust you get something called the scavenge effect, it was once explained to me but i cant remember exactly how it works, anyway you have lost this and you may well be running richer.
I was also told to not worry about things like this until you have taken the car out for a good run, it could be a combination of a valve not seating properly, running rich, turbo seal, i would take it for tuning and the problem will no doubt reveal itself, via the process of elimination.

I get a smoking issue too when the car is left idling for 10 minutes. Once I get moving the problem goes away within a few minutes.
Not sure of the colour of the smoke but it does smell of burning.
Mine does the same !! Not sure why though !!
I'm going to ask the chaps at Jetstream to have a look.

I've had two cars do this from cold but not noticeable from hot. Not sure of the colour of the smoke but it does smell of burning.

Was turbo oil seals on both occasions.
