Just enquired about getting some engine components and cam covers done in black crackle. And have been told its been eu banned. Anyone else found this, or got a secret source.

If tried some the aerosol stuff and the results were not great - but this may well of been down to technique. The instructions on mine insisted that you had to spray in a room above 25'c. I may of got the room too hot and it dried too quickly.

It's your technique. I did a cam cover a few years ago and was blown away by the result from a couple of cans.

it would seem the trick is to bake it in the oven at 200+ degrees to cure it & produce a more coarse crackle & more matt finish.

I used the Frost stuff on my disaerator with good results. I applied it to bare alu that had been prepped with wire wool and properly degreased. I do think the heat we've been having helped a lot. Also, I left it a good 3 days to cure properly.

I used the crackle finish aerosol on a Honda B-series cam cover (notorious for all the paint falling off). The finish was excellent, just as good as the original but it started flaking off after 18 months. I think etch primer is essential for a long lasting finish on aluminium.

Here are some pics of my crackle paint project. I didn't use an oven at all...

Does anyone know if it's really banned and if so why? A google search for 'crackle coating ban' just finds this thread and not much else.

Black crackle as a powder coat seems to be banned - not the wet paint.

Yes, it's part of the oil system on my 360. God knows how much they cost to replace...
