Anyone able to elaborate what a MAF failure would present itself as? Car is a '97 323i which i have recently acquired. I'm not sure if it is me being overly sensitive but sometimes it feels like it pulls like a train, other times the power feels like it is fluctuating ever so slightly through the rev range when on WOT.

Maf sensors usually do not produce a fault code and the failures are seldom intermittant. Usual signs are sluggish performance and poor fuel economy, sometimes with high exhaust emmissions which (may) produce a fault code from the O2 sensors.

Try running it with the MAF disconnected if you think it's suspect (simply pull the plug off).

If the engine runs better with it disconnected then it's faulty (the ECU will run on a default setting so won't damage the engine but it's not good to run with it permanently disconnected as it will not be running in an optimised condition at all times and therefore emissions and fuel consumption will suffer due to over/under fuelling at different times).

It's quite possible that the MAF simply needs cleaning (do a google search, but be careful what you use to clean it with as they are very sensitive).

I had the same car some years ago. Has it had the engine replaced at any stage in its life to solve the nikasil problem? Could be any of the air hoses craked. Pay particular attention to the section of hose connecting the air filter housing to the MAF. (Particularly underneath where a hard plastic connector is just shoved into soft rubber at a strange angle.

I had a problem on mine where one of the thin air hoses was old and worn due to the high temperatures in the engine bay and would suck itself together under hard acceleration.

Its very difficult to explain. Fuel economy is excellent, got just shy of 40mpg on a 600 mile journey the other day according to the obc so no complaints in that respect. Performance wise, sometimes it feels relatively spritely, other times less so. Idle is rock solid, but WOT in 3rd up a slight incline from 1500 rpm to 6000 it almost feels like the power is wavering in and out slightly, and it feels a tad breathless at the upper reaches of the rev range. Perhaps that is just the way these 'restricted' m52's feel?

Funnily enough, some days My 328i Sport feels quite lethargic, like it just can't be arscensoredd to shift itself and then on another day it'll feel like it's capable of giving an M3 a run for it's money!.
I've put it down to being more evidence that My car is a female and I've simply learnt to live with her mood swings!. biggrin

I unplugged mine, and the car ran great - Hence me buying a new one.

There is a dude on eBay doing brand new ones for £40, I bought mine there a week ago - easy to find is you do a quick search (i.e 'E36 Air flow' or something akin to that)

Good luck.

Does not sound like a MAF failure - every car that I have ever owned where the MAF has failed, its been a case of refusing to rev beyond 4000rpm and generally just running like a pig

I had those exact symptoms in an E46 323ci (M52TU engine). I cleaned the MAF with some Isopropyl alcohol spray available in Maplin. This is designed for cleaning electronics and worked a treat on mine..also a cheap fix worth a try!
