Omega Planet Ocean. Dramatically losing time.
Discussion
Looked at my watch this morning at what was in fact half ten and my watch showed half nine! I reset it an hour ago and it is already 5 minutes slow.
I have owned it for about 6 months now and this is the first problem I've had. Otherwise I love it to bits.
Is the battery going? Is it more serious? I hope not!
Advice please.
Thanks.
Nick

Not in a PO, it's not.
Well I don't know whether I should be relieved or not then
Have you tried giving it a good manual wind? Do you wear it all the time, or just infrequently?
My PO keeps very good time when wound, but has occasionally been a little reluctant to start after being in the box for a good while (i.e. a week plus) and doesn't keep great time when not wound.
If winding and wearing it doesn't help, then you're probably in the clutches of the watchmaker. Others may be able to recommend one, although if you're still in warranty I'd be firing it back at Omega to sort.

Omega don't make a quartz Planet Ocean, hence my comment.

Well I'm a bit confused then. This is a new model as seen here: http://www.omegawatches.com/gents/seamaster/planet...Have you tried giving it a good manual wind? Do you wear it all the time, or just infrequently?

I wear it 24/7 usually, but last night it was taken off for some reason and it was next to my bed over night... too strong a coincidence now I come to think of it?
Hope the above helps to clarify the model etc.
Thank you.

Yep, lovely watch. I have the big one with the orange bezel. It's an automatic; the Omega 2500 movement is a heavily modified ETA 2892 with a Daniels co-axial escapement.I wear it 24/7 usually, but last night it was taken off for some reason and it was next to my bed over night... too strong a coincidence now I come to think of it?

New, you say? Get on the horn to Omega. Assuming it's wound, it shouldn't be farting about losing time like that.

Thanks. So please excuse my ignorance...is it battery powered or wound internally by movement?New, you say? Get on the horn to Omega. Assuming it's wound, it shouldn't be farting about losing time like that.

cool, you learn something every day...
Likewise! I feel too ignorant to be owning the watch now. I owe my watch an apology I thought it had a CR2032 in it

Ok, so I've unwound the crown and given it about 40 back and forth winding actions and it did not feel that resistant to the end but thought that must be enough. I have reset it again to the second and I'll see how it is after an hour or so.
So, this time failure is on the back of it not being worn last night. I was away recently and it was only being worn in the evenings for a couple of weeks. I wonder if that has let it wind down also? In any event this is not acceptable and I fear it will have to go away
?Well I take mine off every night and it loses about a second a day. I also sometimes don't wear it during the day at weekends if I am working on the car or out on the mountain bike. Mine's only 2 months old though?
I am sure it shouldn't be doing what yours is doing, it really sounds like a fault. What if the watch had been sitting in the shop window for a few weeks before being sold?
I'd go with calling Omega.

It's impossible to overwind an automatic and you will not feel resistance when it is fully wound for this reason:-"Automatic watches operate quite differently. Since they have the capability of winding themselves, they also need protection against overwinding. So all automatic watches are equipped with a gear that disengages when the spring is fully wound. The advantage is that it makes it impossible to manually overwind an automatic watch. The disadvantage is that you loose the feedback of when you have wound your automatic watch enough."

The crown winds the watch in one direction only - clockwise. (i.e. wind the crown away from you when holding the watch in your left hand and winding with the right).

The power reserve (i.e. how long the watch will run without being wound, either manually or by being worn) is around 40 hours, so assuming you've been wearing it all day, it shouldn't wind down overnight.
?Nick, if you have only worn it occasionally in the evenings could it be that it was low on reserve and last night it stopped an hour before you woke and started wearing it, this would account for the time difference. This would of course have put a little power into it and it would have re-started, although being so low on power it promptly lost 5 mins in the next hour. Now you understand more about it, and have wound it properly why not wear it for a day or so to see what it does?

Great info thanks. I used to own a Rolex Oysterdate and that wound up tight so this is different yes. Thanks again."Automatic watches operate quite differently. That's what bothers me. It was worn 24hrs a day since my return from a 2 week break Sunday, though off my wrist for 7 hours last night. It is currently keeping second correct timing for a couple of hours so I am hoping it had a 'blip' of some sorts and that is steadies itself. If not then off to Omega. After all this is no Casio value-wise.
Thanks everyone for the informative input. I still feel embarrassed that I thought it was battery driven...it's gone up in my estimation now

Nick
I wear mine daily, take it off at night leaving it face up and it's pretty solid at +4s/day.
There've been a few complaints about the 2500 movement simply stopping - but if it's running that slow, it sounds like there's something internally up with it. STS are the UK Omega SC as far as I'm aware, sure they'd be able to give you some help (if it's out of warranty that is)
