Best place to stay, Lake Como or Maggiore?

We are driving down to the lakes soon and after Lake Garda we would like to stay around the western lakes for a few days. Where is the best place to base ourselves so that we have something to see nearby and dont have to spend hours driving to see the other lakes in that area. A friend says avoid Como and look for Maggiore and Orta.
Any suggestions??

We just drove around Italy and stayed at Lake Como on the way back, really enjoyed it. We stayed at the Nest on the Lake, really well priced and super location

We've stayed on Maggiore a few times in the the Hotel Verbano

Lovely area.
