E60 M5 potential clutch problem
Discussion
Hey guys
To cut a long story short, had the 'transmission fault' message come up a few weeks ago under hard acceleration... I took it to my local dealer in Bristol who replaced part of the clutch, a plate or a sensor or something like that (under warrantly less the excess - no quibbles) and informed me the problem was sorted... then, much to my dismay, only a few hours later, the same message came up, again under hard acceleration. It is now back at the dealer and no surprises, they are experiencing the same issue; anyway, I just had a call saying they need to strip down the gearbox/etc to see what the problem is and suggested it may be a clutch issue, which if wear and tear is found, will not be covered under the warranty. The car has just turned 49k miles. I do not want to go spending best part of £2k on a new clutch unless it is absolutely necessary as I don't think 49k miles is necessarily a lot.
Can I please have some advice on how I should play this 'game' now - cheers!
Not good news in the same week as some little b&%tard keyed the whole driver side!!
Thanks in advance

Well, quick update for those of you that are interested... Had a call back from the dealer this afternoon to say that the clutch had failed due to mechanical issues, not wear and tear and that the clutch/flywheel/etc had all been replaced under warranty, a saving of approximately £3k. Result.
I reiterate what has been said time and time again on this forum, do not buy one of these cars without a warranty unless you enjoy haemorrhaging money; £60-70k cars still come with relative bills, even though they can be bought much cheaper.
Worth every penny though...

A clutch lasting 49k miles in a 500BHP monster, doesn't sound too bad to me.
Perhaps it could have lasted longer and might depend on the pattern of use, launches, town vs motorway etc... Mostly on motorways but always (snow excepting) in 500hp sport mode with no traction control and rapid shift selected, the clutch in my current M6 lasted 97,000 miles. Also sold my previous M5 at 126,000 miles on the original clutch, albeit with only 400bhp, an E39. Both cars had half a dozen track days too.Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
