Right guys bit of a advice required I have sold my TVR Tamora which is being picked up on Saturday frown . I loved the Tamora but due to starting a business requiring the garage space at my parents house I needed to sell and get something that can sit on the drive more practically (hardtop) and get in the multi storey car park for when I go back to University in October. . I was thinking of getting a Z4m Coupe but then I stumbled across an SLK55 AMG and cannot stop looking and pictures of them. I am viewing two at the weekend one silver and one black. I also will really miss the sound of my Tamora with its sports exhaust the AMG sound very good (of course not better than a TVR) I ultimately want a manual 996 turbo but I dont think £23k would get me one worth having. SL55 is also an option but in my price range again would struggle to get an example as good as an SLK

So what would your thoughts be on the decision between an slk55 and a z4m. Any help would be greatly appreciated from owners/previous owners etc.. Other reccomendations are welcome

Thanks in advance!

Z4 M is a far better drive and would is miles better for a B/A road blast whereas the big 55's are more suited to fast comfortable motorway wafting.

M3 CSL wink

If only they could somehow stuff a manual box in an SLK55 AMG Black...

M3 CSL. Modern classic.

Of the two you want though, I would have the M Coupe. I prefer the Merc's V8, but auto only? No thank you.

In complete honesty, an SLK AMG that drove past me on a nice sunny day last summer as I walked down the street sounded better than any TVR I've heard. I love the SLK 55 AMG, it has not received criticism, perhaps a lack of praise rather, for not being the most "involving" car, and it's probably true that it's still more grand tourer than a "proper" sports car, but I think sometimes the best advice you can have when buying cars is to ignore the journalists and just buy the car that feels right!

CSL was another one on my mind but I can only find ones with high mileage for my budget. Would prefer to only spend 20k so can have some more cash to invest in my business and I think a CSL for 20k would be very ropey/cat d/ moon and back miles.. Looked at Porche 911 C4S's too, thanks for the responses so far

PS. I am yet too hear an SLK55 AMG in the flesh so I may be corrected in the videos they do sound awesome!!!

Well I love the SLK55, Z4M and M3 CSL... tough choice!

No experience of any of them so maybe my opinion isn't as strong as others but...

If I wanted a comfortable flash cruiser to pose in daily I'd have the SLK55.

If I wanted an involving drive which will keep me on my toes then I'd have the Z4.

If I wanted soemthing a little less obvious which won't depreciate as much I'd have an M3 CSL which imo does everything... it's a flash looking M3 to most people, it's a respected car to petrolheads and it's certainly going to be involving to drive but can also be driven sensibly.

I'd also consider a Boxster S, especially if you like Porkers.

What do M6's go for now days?

Failing all of the above, get an MX5.

If I were starting a new business but still wanted a modern performance car, I'd be tempted into a £10k e46 M3 and keep the rest of the cash back. Just IMO.

I had a 330ci m sport couple years ago and dont really want to be stuck behind the same dash.... I like to change cars every few months. I have enough to invest in the business at the level its at now as I am at university so don't want to be running a huge business if it will affect my final year at uni. So got until next June time to play with a few cars before I invest the whole money. I nearly bought a Noble M12 few weeks back but resisted as that would need to be garaged really... one day I NEED to own one for a bit still cannot get the test drive out of my head! awesome cars!

Test drove an SLK55 the other week.

Good points:
- My god, that engine is epic. Massive power anywhere, glorious noise
- Nice roof mechanism
- Steering was a little artificial, but turned in well.

Bad points:
- Dash felt/looked really poor for £50k car, nasty plastics
- Autobox. It isn't great, but changes were smooth enough and it held onto gears well.
- Front discs + pads are £1500+fitting. Over £2k for a set front/rear (unless you buy a facelift model)

Its a good, comfy cruiser. I think you'd have more fun down a B-road in the other alternatives, but it was very comfy, well equipped and dispatched traffic in a flash. Depends what you want from the car?

As an ammendment, I speaking without bias you'd struggle to find reason to buy a SLK55 over a 987 Boxster S - its a manual, for a start, as well as being a better drive.

But then there's always this reason:

I would say Z4m. They look fantastic, drive well and have that lovely straight six.
On a side note and I may get poked into a cage for suggesting this, but have you looked at a Corvette. The 405hp Z06 is in your price range. They sound great and have bag loads of character whilst being bullet proof. Downside obviously is left hand drive.

would I be right in thinking an SL 55 would be less reliable having the supercharger and being a couple of years older? Looking theres some very nice ones and you get an extra 150BHP must be brutally fast!

Not heard about s/c issues, but have heard about roof issues (but I have no facts or first-hand experience on this)

No idea on the cars as I haven't any experience of them but I'd like to say hats off to you mate, final year at uni and by the sounds of the cars you are looking at your business is going very wel!
