Mark 2 Sport - Nearly there!
Discussion
Hello Ultima lovers. I have been building a mark 2 sport since 2000. It's been banished to the back of the garage several times until I got my enthusiasm back! The guy who had it before me put some panels and the uprights on before he lost intrest. I've got it running and used it a few times at Woodbridge airfield through Javalin trackdays. My mission now is to get it through an IVA test.
I've attached a few photos. I know it's not the same as the gorgeous GTR but you can see where they came from.
I've got some electric mirrors that i'm going to replace my racing ones with and just a few other jobs to do. My short block chevy is from 1983 so should get through the emissions test OK. Just need a bit of motivation!
Hopefully I will then be able to meet some of you guys when you go to any events.

I thought the engine has to be pre 1975 to avoid emissions tests? Pre Aug-1986 you have to be less than 4.5%CO and 1200 ppm HC.
I also thought that a lot of changes from sport to GTR (let alone mark2 to GTR) were to address problems with SVA (IVAs predecessor). For example, that is why the top door hinge is recessed on the GTR. Probably end up duct taping a squash ball on the hinge for the test.
Sure all of these things are surmountable, and as others have said, well done for preserving that fantastic bit of Ultima history.
p.s. I also think your Gulf colour scheme suits this car much better than it does the GTR.

Wow! This (and the visit to Stoneleigh) has brought me back out of retirement
Good effort going for IVA, I am putting a Mk3 through later this year all being well and we share a few issues, mirrors being one of them, where did you source electric mirrors from and what style have you gone for?
Hinges are an interesting point, I think I'm either going to put covers over my external hinges or mount some gull-wing style hinges on the top and open the doors slightly differently.
Watch out for rules on the height of the lights too, I thing we'll both struggle a little with the standard pod height and I am considering getting new small HID lights for the pods which can mount high up and jacking up the suspension up to meet the regulatory height. I've even considered mounting lights on top of the fibreglass for IVA!
Interested to hear how you get on and share experiences/recommendations.

Hi guy's thanks for all your comments! I like the sound of the BBS wheels they'll be more in keeping with the period. Had a result with the Rondells, turns out they don't make them any more and the guy's with the escort cosworths are after them. I should be able to change them without a huge expense.
I've rounded off the door hinges but i'll have to see what the IVA inspector says. Plan B will be the tennis balls and gaffa tape.
The back end does go on for miles but the porsche 917 was from a similar period and looks great in the Rothmans colours. I think a wing will be a post IVA project and will make it look loads better.
Going to change the racetech mirrors for electric MX5 mirrors, they are bottom mounted so with a shim to level them up should sit happily where the other mirrors go and be adjustable from the drivers seat.
I'll have to investigate the emissions situation.
Sounds like there are at least 2 of us having a go at getting the old models road legal. I'm sure with a bit of work we'll make it.

It does not matter how far they stick out as long as they have a 2.5 Radius anywhere the inspector can touch with his test sphere.Ultima29 said:

Check the IVA manual for field of view. If you just mount the mirrors on the wing top you may not be able to see low down behind the car.Steve

Well done for the perseverance. Looks like you just have a few bits to sort and you are there.
I think a set of BBS wheels would suit the car quite well with a taller sidewall set of tyres too.
2+ or cheaper paint the wheels satin black I think a set of BBS wheels would suit the car quite well with a taller sidewall set of tyres too.
If u BBS wheels and fantastic the porsche wing and head light covers you will have this

MX-5 mirrors eh? I have an MX-5 somewhere here... off to take a look
I was thinking of taking mine for IVA without windows in a-la the GTW but I think the forward facing rear part of the window hole will have too small a radius.
Steve, do both mirrors need to be adjustable from the drivers seat or just the drivers?

As there is no interior rear view mirror the car must have two door mirrors both of which must then be adjustable from the drivers seat. The manual is not clear if you need to have your seat belt on at the time.

On the black car the mirrors are outside the body line so will also require that they fold back with application of reasonable force and that when clicked back into position require no further adjustment. Simple answer is to keep them inside the body line.
You will not get away with leaving the glass out of the doors. The examiner will say the car is designed to have them so they need to be fitted. Likewise you could submit a CanAm without a windscreen or aero screen as you will state you do not intend to have one. If the windscreen frame was fitted they would again expect the glass to be there.
