I did my first 'paid gig' over the last 2 days.

Headshots for a friends Real Estate website, in a 'meet the team' section.

Had no idea what kind of money to ask for, was for 26 people, have produced 2 shots of each person.

The shots themselves took about 20-25 mins to do, then another hour, hour and a half last night to crop and mild PP in CS4.

I threw a figure of 1000AED out which at today's f/x rate is 166 quid which the boss was happy with.

That's the 50mm they were shot on more than paid for itself smile

The fact that I was happy with the amount and he was happy to pay it would indicate that the price was right but how much would a pro of cost him ish?

nb - Lessons learnt, sneak out of the office early to do them all in one go next time, did it over 2 days, the first day light was great, yesterdays wasn't!

A pro has to cover other costs. Gear, software, office, lighting kit, travel, insurance. Then there's recouping the investment they've made in their own skill over the years - you're not just paying for their time to take the shots & convert them, you're paying for the years of experience & skill they've accrued which means they can deliver a better result than an 'am with a cam'. Furthermore, 26 headshots would realistically be a one day shoot with travel, planning, PP factored in - and its highly unlikely you'd book another job on the same day anyway.

I can't give you any specifics pricewise (its not what I usually do, although I have done them as part of another job) but I can tell you I've seen similar jobs being quoted anything from £300-£1000 on a pro network I'm a member of. Quality costs....

Hugely aware that they will be not of the standard that a pro would produce, would be naive of me to think otherwise.

The brief was simple, the location already chosen and it is 10 minutes from my office on the Palm, was as easy as I could have wished for. Two of the girls were smoking hot as well, always a bonus!

As Trackdemon says there is no set rate; people who take photos for a living (should) charge whatever the market will stand. I have much more experience in weddings than commercial so I charge mid-range for weddings but low for commercial. It's whatever your experience and portfolio justify.

My commercial/studio rate is £75/hr, £200/half day, £350/day including processing. Typically 1/3 of the time is processing and presentation. With practice you get lighting set up quicker and processing faster so productivity increases. For location work you also have to allow for travel (both cost and time) - one hour on site can wipe out most of a day.

I did 84 head shots for a small city firm recently, and that took two days, and a extra half-day to catch people who weren't in the office on either of the other days! The time included a little time hanging around waiting for people to be out of meetings etc, but the key to doing it efficiently is to have someone at the company making sure the next person is waiting while you do the one before. Including post production and expenses their bill was more than that mentioned above.

Predictable.... haha, I will have a think about it wink

My mate who works for them and arranged it did all the shepherding, they were literally queued up behind me waiting for the nod so logistically it was perfect.

Which is why when people ask me how long it took to write a piece of music, I usually answer 30 years. smile
