EX1 Sets Electric Record On The Nordschleife

While the likes of Nissan, Porsche and Chevrolet do battle for fastest 'Ring laps with their production cars, French manufacturer Peugeot has never troubled the timekeepers for an officially certified record.

Until last weekend that is, when the stylish but not destined for production in a million years EX1 concept bagged the 'Ring record for electric cars - covering the 12.944 miles in 9:01.338, at an average speed of 85.951mph. The previous record of 9:51.45 was held by, oh hang on... Peugeot hasn't told us in the official press release, and a sense of terminal ennui prevents us from Googling it.

Weather conditions were 'far from favourable' for the attempt last weekend, says Peugeot, although the EX1 has the clear advantage of not needing windscreen wipers so they shouldn't grumble too much.

I think everyone would be interested if any car could do 12,944 miles without any kind of refueling or recharging :-)

Don't know why they bother. At least with the 911s/GTRs/M3s setting quick times, it's kind of worth their while as you can buy these as opposed to something that will never see the light of day in production form.

I'm another in the camp that thinks this is a bit of a "chocolate teapot" record.

I don't think anyone doubts that electric cars can be fast (and indeed fun), as Tesla have proved that, it is their driving range and recharging time that are the current technical bottlenecks.

Once someone manages to drive from New York to Los Angeles in less than 10 days (that'll require 300 miles a day and an overnight recharge) then I'll be impressed.

Almost there, but I think the only way an electric car can possibly be a replacement for a proper car is if it can recharge in the same (or close to) time as a petrol/diesel powered car.

300 miles is flock all to cover in a day, it's a tank of fuel, I'd do that most Saturdays/Sundays when I'm out for a drive.

Mine does. It saves them money on the petrol they pay for anyway and makes them look greener.
