Willing to spend about £2k and happy for UK or Import although from what I have seen the Imports seem to have a lot less rust.
I am looking at cars from Goodwood Sportscars based up near Berwick and have seen this:
http://www.goodwoodsportscars.co.uk/gallery_403283... which seems a fair price.
Before you suggest other cars on their site the Green one is sold, the Black S is sold and so is the Merlot one.
This car is simply for my girlfriend and I to enjoy some open top motoring

You've made the correct choice. Now find the correct car.
Goodwood Sportscars get mixed reviews on here: I have no personal experience but that would make me check a potential purchase very carefully.
Goodwood was very dissapointing. He has 6 cars for sale on the web site of which 4 are sold, one has is awaiting the previous purchased to return and the other, well I gave up at that point

Spend Yesterday looking at cars, what a disaster.
Why on earch do people not bother to take the time to repare a car for sale? Honestly an hours work would work wonders.
Today was better and saw 4 cars and these two caught my eye.
This one is high miles, not a problem but probably needs the roof reparing or replacing so a deal would need to be struck:

This one is more expensive but is newer:

You should be grateful people don't bother to prep their cars, because that makes it easier for buyers to pick up a bargain. Last week on ebay I bought this R-reg 1.6 for considerably less than £2k:

Looked a bit smudgy on ebay but has just 69k miles backed by paperwork, had a new hood last year, and when I picked it up I found it ran very sweetly. Had a few drying marks on the paintwork which disappeared after a quick go-over with Autoglym Paint Restorer, car is now well on the way to looking mint.
Point being there are LOADS of MX5s about, especially at this time of year. Prices shouldn't go up just because it's the season for soft-tops: the supply of cars for sale is more than enough to meet the demand. So don't feel rushed or pressured - and don't be put off by a bit of dirt.

GRA Cars in Ryton, Gateshead would be a good place to look for a used MX5 in the North East. That's where I got mine from, at a reasonable price. He has a good selection of MX5's, so when I bought mine from him I simply chose the best he had and went with that! Well worth popping in, he even let me test drive on my own.
I wouldn't be so hung up about getting an import though, many imports have been in this country so long they're rusting away now. You'd be better off judging each car based on it's own merits when you look at it.

Now sorted, this came up for sale yesterday and I bought it today:
