Banger racing: world of sport

For no particular reason have been thinking about the joys of watching banger racing as a nipper. It used to be on world of sport as I recall.

Anyone on here involved in it...any photos etc?

Come on sky sports. I've had enough of all this glossy premier league nonsense. Bring back banger racing - a sport that would benefit from all this new-fangled "3D" business if ever there was one!

Relatively inexpensive; grass roots stock car racing is great live entertainment.

I just about remember watching it on the box
i allways make the firecracker at areana, usually a good turn out
I know quite a few racers and deal with em regularly, a goldmine for classic owners after parts

I don't understand banger racing tbh, do they get points for crashing in to cars that have already stopped, surely you'd want to keep racing rather than ruin your car for nothing?

I used to watch it on world of sport every saturday (usually after the wrestling lol) !
I loved it. Completely pointless yes, but good fun to watch. Do you remember the car & caravan banger races too ?

I live about 5 miles away from Skegness Stadium and I love motor racing. But I have never been there.

It just doesn't appeal to me, I know that some of the top teams, stock cars not bangers, spend a lot of money on it but it just doesn't click with me.

Last year there was a BBC programme about stock car racing and it gave a very good insight to the sport.

Great laugh .... I prep full contact bangers with a mate and then wreck them at Mildenhall or Wembley stadium.

Its a XK150. Worth maybe £20,000+ in good condition. Bought as a wreck and with a hell of a lot of work to get it to look like that and drive so fair play to him

And that's the problem. A lot of interesting old metal that gets pinched ends up on banger circuits

that's a very uneducated mindless comment. Sure a car can end up anywhere, but lots more stolen cars end up rallied, or more likely stripped for parts then burnt out, or the car weighed in by the theives and crushed.

Most 'interesting' material is bought for a few hundred quid and is far too economical to repair and more often than not was being sent for scrap anyway. You wouldnt believe how many granadas, cortinas, etc still get weighed in, although they do try and get them raced if they arent too badly rusted away!

The roof had been chopped off, the boot, bonnet and doors were missing, and the engine was incomplete. Also most of the interior was missing. It was never an economic prospect for proper restoration. Still sad though.
