Like most towns now, we have a few Polish Delicatessens in Cheltenham. Proper ones with Polish signs on the windows and everything. biggrin

I'm always looking to try new things, so what should I be looking to buy from your typical Polish deli. The cured sausages and meats are good, but what else can you recommend?

Makowiec is nice, bit like a danish pastry in some ways, but made with loads of poppy seeds in it and not too sweet (although the dough usually has honey in it). Very tasty.

Pierogi - they are a kind of dough filled with any combination of meat, cheese, potato, pickled cabbage, mushrooms, onions etc. Then they are boiled, and they look a bit like ravioli. Can get sweet ones too.

Rye bread. This is the proper accompaniment for salami, salt beef, etc.

Also herrings, gherkins and pirogi, as mentioned.

A decent quality tinned (or better still home made) żurek soup would be nice but I've yet to find one over here.

Cabbage rolls?

I'd be binging on the different sausages and cooked meats though mainly, when we drove back from Poland the car was loaded up and the smell was better than any magic tree smile
