Stung by recent criticism of my 4x4, I'm determined to prove I'm a real PH'er, so I'm thinking of getting an MX5, since everybody always says that's what everybody else should get!

But seriously, it would be nice to have something a little more chuckable and lightweight for when I don't need to carry the family etc etc.

I've found an MX5(or more correctly Eunos Roadster), for £400, needing a clutch slave cylinder and an MOT, it's been parked up since the beginning of the year. It's a 1992 in red, 100k, worth a punt?

Rust, rust, rust. Check for rust. And again.

Everything else is much less of a worry. Not sure if a 92 is still at risk of 'short nose crank' syndrome, though to be fair if its runs ok, I owuldnt worry too much. Clutch slave cylinder is about £12 and an hour to fix.

Does it start and run well?

If the rear arches/sills have any bubbling on them, they'll be f***** inside. And that area is an MOT fail as its where the seat belts mount.

Rust areas to check -

Front wing bottoms.
Sills, all along, including jacking points.
Frame rails (box sections running under car). There are often smashed and dented and then rust.
Rear Wheel arches, feel inside lips, all the way round to where they meet the sills. Inside the wheel well at the front, and all round that area.

If you can get an MOT on it without too much cost, you shouldnt really use much. You could break it for £400 if needs must.

At that kind of money it's pretty risk free. You could always break it for spares if it is too far gone

You've not been a member on here for long but you really do come across as a troll in every post I've read of yours.

Do you have any interest in cars?

Yep, go for it! Friend and I bought one for £400 last year and turned it into a track car. Been totally trouble-free.

Snot - news to me that some rust on sills or arches is an mot fail, would need bullet proof confirmation on that I'm afraid.

My opinion is that at 400 quid as long as its only clutch slave, you cannot go wrong. Take it for MOT?

Thats not quite what I meant. But if it's really rotten i'n thst bottom corner then it may well fail, I think the rule is that there's no structural rust within 6 inches of anything important such as where a seatbelt is attached.

It can be. If there is any rust perforation within 6" of the seat belt anchor point it's an MOT fail. The most common spot for rust on the sills is at the seam near the rear which is within that area.

Thanks for all the replies guys, it really seems like a no-brainer, just need to arrange to see it and pick it up I guess.

I've been reading up a little and it seems that the Eunos is likely to be reasonably specced, i.e. it may have aircon etc.

Re. the hairdresser comment, it'll be quite interesting, I guess I'll become schizophrenic, since my other cars a FFRR, so I'll have to be a hairdresser if I go out in one car or a drug dealer/ school rum mum/ footballer if I take the other!

Oh, sorry I forgot, I buy cars on the basis of how great they are, not based in idiots pre-conceptions about who drives them!;)

1992 Red Eunos didn't have anything added to it.

(It wasn't a special of any kind)

1.6 / 116bhp
Manual Steering
Manual Windows
Eunos Steering wheel

Is it the 1.6?

It is if its a 1992.

1.8 was released for 94 model year, my cars has a very early NA8C vin code (pretty sure it was it was the 21st production 1.8 JDM car ever made!) and was built in 1993.

If you have a Eunos it will say on the drivers door sticker what it is.
IIRC.

I haven't found many errors with the guide and didn't make it so...... Funny that according to the guide an s-special in 92/94/95/96!

ETA: Is yours a V-Special type 2? as above it should say in the door.
