Should I get a Eunos (£400)
Discussion
Stung by recent criticism of my 4x4, I'm determined to prove I'm a real PH'er, so I'm thinking of getting an MX5, since everybody always says that's what everybody else should get!
But seriously, it would be nice to have something a little more chuckable and lightweight for when I don't need to carry the family etc etc.
I've found an MX5(or more correctly Eunos Roadster), for £400, needing a clutch slave cylinder and an MOT, it's been parked up since the beginning of the year. It's a 1992 in red, 100k, worth a punt?

Rust, rust, rust. Check for rust. And again.
Everything else is much less of a worry. Not sure if a 92 is still at risk of 'short nose crank' syndrome, though to be fair if its runs ok, I owuldnt worry too much. Clutch slave cylinder is about £12 and an hour to fix.
Does it start and run well?
If the rear arches/sills have any bubbling on them, they'll be f***** inside. And that area is an MOT fail as its where the seat belts mount.
Rust areas to check -
Front wing bottoms.
Sills, all along, including jacking points.
Frame rails (box sections running under car). There are often smashed and dented and then rust.
Rear Wheel arches, feel inside lips, all the way round to where they meet the sills. Inside the wheel well at the front, and all round that area.
If you can get an MOT on it without too much cost, you shouldnt really use much. You could break it for £400 if needs must.

Thats not quite what I meant. But if it's really rotten i'n thst bottom corner then it may well fail, I think the rule is that there's no structural rust within 6 inches of anything important such as where a seatbelt is attached. hornetrider said:

It can be. If there is any rust perforation within 6" of the seat belt anchor point it's an MOT fail. The most common spot for rust on the sills is at the seam near the rear which is within that area.Edited by MX-5 Lazza on Friday 6th May 09:18
Thanks for all the replies guys, it really seems like a no-brainer, just need to arrange to see it and pick it up I guess.
I've been reading up a little and it seems that the Eunos is likely to be reasonably specced, i.e. it may have aircon etc.
Re. the hairdresser comment, it'll be quite interesting, I guess I'll become schizophrenic, since my other cars a FFRR, so I'll have to be a hairdresser if I go out in one car or a drug dealer/ school rum mum/ footballer if I take the other!
Oh, sorry I forgot, I buy cars on the basis of how great they are, not based in idiots pre-conceptions about who drives them!;)
