Just got my insurance renewal... was £1500 last year, this year £1900!!!

Four years no claims, 'B' area, off street parking, over 25, 10k miles - the only difference between this year and last being that the bin man reversed into the car and we claimed £2.5k worth of damage from their insurer via Europa Consultants, without even getting our insurer involved!

Unfortunately, it's still the cheapest quote, so I'm going to have to bend over and take it frown

Even the insurance guy was shocked and had to check because he didn't think it should make any difference let alone that much difference...

I'm guessing you've spent some time on the phone with other brokers/underwriters to see if you can get a cheaper quote, rather than relying on comparetheostrich.com et al?

That is fairly pants - had the same thing with Esure as their data indicated that if you were involved in an accident (even if not your fault) then you were more likely to be involved in another accident, so they increased my premium because a named driver on my policy had been hit at a roundabout (in their car, not mine) whilst stationary.

Car insurance premiums have risen heavily this year. It's probably nothing to do with the non-fault claim.

They have indeed, but I'd be awfully surprised if he couldn't get it at pretty much the same rate as last year by ringing round some of the better brokers.

My renewal came in over £100 more than I paid last year, after some ringing round I got it £10 less than last year, and thats with a £1500 fault claim against me!

I agree completely. Without testing the market, it's not safe to presume that it's anything to do with the non-fault claim.

The renewal for fully comp insurance for my Jaguar S-Type 4.2 V8 this year was around £100 less than the previous year. How come? I use a broker and avoid comparison websites. The problem with the latter is that they are far too price orientated, whereas the extent and range of what's covered and what's not covered is far more critical in my view. For example, comparison sites always indicate that cover when abroad is included. What they are saying is that minimum legal cover only is included, and that's generally no good due to the consequential personal exposure when abroad. Last year after considerable digging around I found that one of the so called cheap insurers then charge up to around £60 PER DAY to provide your UK cover when abroad. So, I guesss you get what you pay for, which means for lots of people who look at price only that they are not covered as comprehensively as they think, a situation they have created, possibly unwittingly.

The fact that all the comparison websites are owned by financial organisations, many of which are insurers, can only mean that they are using it to market their own products. They are relying on Joe Public to be lead by price alone and not be as diligent as he should be when it comes to getting and paying for what he really needs and wants.

This is what I've been thinking, all those comparethewhatever sites all come back with very similar results at the realistic end, as if they are tracking each others quotes and in reality seem as acting more like a cartel, every year its a game of bloody cat n' mouse.

This year I'm going to get on the phone to a few brokers who are not affiliated with these online quoting systems.

Any broker suggestions?

I used the comparison sites to beat my broker's price down by some as there was another massive hike this year.

Strangely it was cheaper to go back to Fully Comp on my ancient old E36, after 3 years of TPFT.

I believe that many people just take the hit and the insurers know this but just you call a few other companies and you'll be surprised at the range of prices that they come up with.

My bike insurance renewal was £440 so I showed them a far cheaper quote and they dropped to £200 just like that.

They are hoping that you will be too lazy to work at dropping the price.

I have a non fault as well and some companies load yet some don't.

Good luck.

WHAT........ It is a legal requirement to inform your insurance comp of any incident regardless of fault.

In addition all the legwork would have been done by your ins comp rather than you speaking to the other person & the other insurance company.

Note also that insurance premiums have also gone up a lot this year due to the high number of claims generally and their high value - specifically personal injury claims

When someone rear ended me car damaged and repaired through the insurance route they kept pushing me for whiplash... it would be at least £2.5k to help cover the discomfort etc.
Um neck was sore for 3 days then gone.
I dont make a personal injury claim when playing sport.

Note I would certainly make an injury claim if it was a properly bad incident.

Sure is. I didn't last year as I too had done all the legwork and had not involved my insurance company but they knew and so did a number of other companies that I tried to get quotes off who then told ME about my non-fault claim.

Could I get the stupid bint that crashed into my parked car to play ball and just pay me the cash, no way. She wanted to go through her insurance which I'd imagine is now reaping the rewards and costing her far more than the £600 needed to fix my car. I hope so.

I'm really not sure why people claim for minor accident damage now as it will cost you more in the long run.

I just have insurance now because you have to and, touch wood, if I have a whopper and take out a bus queue.

When it happened to me being rear ended - on the fact o it not too much visable damage, but new rear bumper, paint bumper, new parking sensors, full geometry check + the unknown as in could be a bent chassis...ouch, as such they other party called me up to see if they could go down that route but when I listed those parts plus of course hire car as I use my car in effect as a comp car and dont have access to another car meant it clearly wuld be in the thousands.
Also if your doing that you may as well load up both sides and get it done properly.

Lastly if you have any accident you must inform the police & your insurance comp even if there isnt going to be any payment.

Does sometimes make a company car just easier - car damaged fix it deal with all the other parties and I need a hire car dropped off to my house etc.

If that's true, then we are truly in Orwellian territory. If both parties agree not to, I see zero point in informing anyone if its only personal property damage.

Does that mean I need to tell them each time I scuff my rim on the kerb, or scratch the paint with something!?
Pathetic.

I certainly wont be following that idiotic rule.

Let's just clarify a few things...

The car is a BMW 650i
The repair has just been completed before the renewal so declared on renewal
The legwork was done by Europa Consultants to claim from the bin man's insurer
I have shopped around and Elephant et al are the cheapest by far
The insurance guy did the quote with and without the incident to check and it added £400

Try Liverpool Victoria, they don't appear on comparisons but were cheaper than the cheapest there on mine and my partners cars.
