Taking the scenic route (every day)

Just wondering if anyone else does this, for the past 6 months or so I've been taking a different route to work for a few reasons, mainly driving pleasure/no stop start rubbish.

The shortest (distance wise) route to my work is 15 miles. Shown on the map below it's pretty much straight up. The journey typically takes 40 minutes and according to my calculations, would cost me £2.87 at 32mpg.



...but what I do instead, takes me 20.1 miles, and averages me 36mpg. I drive across some short country roads where I can have a blast and it keeps me sane throughout the day. It costs me an additional £1.10 per day.



I'm starting to wonder though, since doing that route it has cost me lets say £140 over the past 6 months.

A price worth paying! What do you think PH?

I have noticed that I have stopped driving for fun in recent years. I am not sure if this is to do with the cars that I drive, getting older, the financials or the amount of work distance that I do.

Generally I will take whatever is quickest (not necessarily shortest).

Depends what car I'm in. If I'm in the C-Max I take the quickest route and strangely always aim for the motorway as that's where the car is at its best. In the MR2 I will often come off the motorway a couple of junctions early and take the fun route home. I'll also just go for a drive to no where in particular. I think it depends on the car and whether you're in a rush or not.

When I was at uni my drive there was 12 miles through town and along a dual carriageway, it would usually take 30-40 minutes.

The alternative was 20 miles all but 5 of them being on small unclassified roads and B roads, as I had a mini and fuel was <60ppl I didn't take any notice of the cost, the time didn't make a difference either as I was having much more fun.

I used to take the scenic route every day with my Impreza. Lots of nice B roads

These days I work from home so I only go out when I need to go to the shops etc. Living in the middle of nowhere now though means the scenic route is the only option!! YAY!!

Motorway on the way to work, scenic route on the way home. Every day.

The scenic route might take a little longer, but it's a much nicer drive.

When I first bought my RX8 I only lived 3 miles from work, which took the best part of 5 minutes to drive. Pretty much every drive home took me an hour, as I would drive in the opposite direction from my house and have a blast around some country roads.

Unless I was pissed off after work, when I would drive straight home and crack open the beers.

Yeah that's what the police do.

By the way Mr Policemen: Tomorrow I will be driving at 150mph on the M5, just near Bristol then later on the M8 for a bit maybe a bit quicker than that as I will need to get there before I run out of petrol.

I definately won't be on the M1 so don't bother putting any cameras on there.

Er, no, you're not really that important - besides the cost of the petrol to get there isn't worth the income from the speed awareness courses they're now plugging to top up their coffers.
