wide angle question

Is it possible to get a very wide angle lens/conveter that wont badly distort the picture, or is it unaviodable?

It is possible to use an ultra-wide-angle lens without much distortion for landscape shots if you use it right, hold it at the right angle, etc.

I've got a 400D for the time being, so will crop somewhat. I tried a Sigma 10-20 the other day, which seem quite wide with very little distortion - was good - but what I'm wondering is it possible to go even wider without the results being those circular types images Ive seen, that look like goldfish bowls.
For example, would a fixed 8mm lens to th trick?

Or do I need yo upgrade to a full frame sensor to get wha Im after.

The phrase you are looking for is rectilinear. The widest rectilinear aps-c lens is the sigma 8-16mm, which is roughly the same as the widest full frame rectilinear lens the sigma 12-24mm. These would both give an angle of view of around 114 degrees.
