are they enforcable? they are getting more numerous near where i live and want to know if i can ignore them. they are the ones that are rectangular with black lettering on a white background and usually have "max speed 20 mph" on them. now, im of the opinion that they ARENT enforcable limits, but am i right? i dont want to go through one at 25 and get done for 25% over the limit. any confirmation would be gratefully recieved.

They have to have A Circular Red band around a White Background with the numbers in Black to be valid. This can be within a Rectangular Sign But I believe this would have to be A yellow Background around the Speed sign with a Black Border. Some BIB's from Middlesborough got off in North Yorkshire because the signs were incorrect this really offended the "Speed Kills" lobby.

ISTR that that's a non prescribed use of these signs.
If it's the ones I'm thinking about, they shouldn't be used on their own, but under a 'hazard' warning, e.g. a 'double bend' or 'slippery road'.

Oh you should have seen the panic THAT little episode caused amongst the local Highways Depts.

Council staff on double time changing signs on a sunday morning.

You couldn't make it up.

One for the lawyers/BiB:

What remedies are open to a motorist who had been banned (under "totting-up") for exceeding a speed limit that was subsequently ruled illegal (eg. Cleveland) and had their conviction and punishment (ie. fine, points and ban) set aside:

a) If they had subsequently been stopped for driving whilst banned?

b) If they had lost their job (and possibly their home) as a result?

And are there precents?

Just a thought prompted by this and other similar threads. Can't recall these questions being asked and answered in one place before.

I'm neither a lawyer nor a BiB, but judging by our compensation culture, I'm sure they be lots of payouts.

Going off topic even more, last night I saw an advert on TV for the usual compensation 'no win no fee' rubbish, however this advert was for if your endowment mortgage hadn't matured to as much as you had hoped. WTF? surely an endowment mortgage is a gamble and that's the whole point, you take the risk and live with the consequences. What next? people suing casinos because they lost money?

Page 21 - my little yellow book "Know Your Traffic Signs" - published by DfT - so "Must be reliable"????

Well it says:

"Remember that in area of street lighting (other than motorways) a 30mph limit applies unless another limit is specifically signed."

Then it gives visual examples:

The red circular lollipop "gives orders"
NSL lollipop
Latest scam signs - official ones!

The one you are talking about - rectangular "Max Speed" on white background :

ADVISORY speed limit at bend or other hazard.

Quite a useful book!

I can confirm that those rectangular "20mph max speed" signs are indeed advisory I drove through a village a few weeks back which was a 30 limit (and hence was doing 30) and there was a number of these signs (both in yellow and white backgrounds). Rounded a corner to be confronted with 2 people in fluorescent jackets, one with a clip-board and the other a speed gun . Looked at the speedo and saw just under 30 as she pointed it at me. Nothing through the post so I'm assuming that they were enforcing the 30 limit

Not that it matters, anyway, since they're not regulatory; however, in the interests of completeness and since I went to the bother of looking it up.
They cannot be used on their own, they must only be used in combination with:
1) The 'bend' sign and its two variants (side roads on the bend).
2) The 'double bend' sign
3) The Loose chippings sign.

so are the variable speed limits on the M25 mandatory then? (the yellow ones, as opposed to the red circled signs)

thanks for all the info guys - the signs near me are indeed in conjunction with bends - though its nice to know they are indeed advisory.
