I'm currently in the process of respraying a few plastic parts off the car (wing mirrors, lower bumper grille, etc) in Satin Black.

I have rubbed down the parts with 600 grit wet + dry and applied 4 coats of Red Oxide Primer.

Onto the next stage of applying the Satin Black, I was thinking that 4 thin coats will be sufficient coverage. But what Grit wet + dry should I use in between coats? Will 1200 be to coarse? or should I go as far as 2000 grit?

Its my first attempt at respraying so most of it is done using common sense and some internet research.

After turning my utility room into a temporary spray booth and nailing a clothes hanger to the wall:

After being rubbed down ready for firtst coat: (sorry for crappy phone pics)

After one coat:

And finally after 4 coats:

1200 should be fine.

I tend to use 1200 with water because the grit diminishes fairly quickly and you get a good finish. Less critical on satin I would have thought and 4 coats will cover anything.

So some 1200 grit and a bit of water should do the trick then! Happy Days!

you don't need to flat between coats unless you get dirt or crap in the paint
