I was made redundant from my job at the end of last year. I had a taken out redundancy protection so am under no real pressure to apply for any old job but have looked for jobs that fit my skill set.
I have applied for a role at a financial institution via an agency. I’ve been to 3 interviews at the firm over the course of 3 weeks and in that time I’ve met 3 managers, an assistant director and a director.
Feedback from the firm to agency was very good and they seemed very happy so both myself and the agency thought the job was in the bag. Imagine my surprise to see an email this morning from financial website advertising the job but directly through the firm not via an agency.
I spoke to the agent and he did seem surprised and spoke to the client, apparently they want to see if there is anyone else out there before offering me the job.
My dilemma is what to do if they offer me the job, I like the sound of the job but their actions have soured my views of the company and I’m not sure if I could work for a firm that operates this way.
I’m interested to see what fellow PH’er make of this or am I just being an idiot ?

Unfortunately, it's a buyer's market, jobswise. Companies can afford to be picky with so many professionals out of work and, in some ways, they can't afford to not be picky because times for many companies aren't easy.
Given where we are, I'd suggest you have little choice but to sit tight. They won't have taken that course of acton lightly so, frankly, you're were probably best of a bunch but still forced slightly too many compromises on them.
