Hi
I have a MK3 Fiesta shell that is new; new as in it has never been made into a vehicle.

It has though been exposed to the elements at some point over the years. Due to this there is surface rust on the shell in quite a few places.

My plan is to buy a compressor and paint the shell and rebuild an RS Turbo.

I had thought there would be a need to sand blast the shell to remove the surface rust but have just tried Krust (the anti rust chemical) on the battery tray.

Below is a picture before and after treatment.

Is there anyone on here with the knowledge to offer advice? I need to know whether I could treat all the surface rust in the same manner instead of sand blasting??

If so to get a good surface for primer and paint what should the next step be?? Sanding until smooth?

Any help is much appreciated

Thank you

that would be absolutely fine as long as it definitely IS only surface oxidisation and it hasnt got properly wet so waters got into seams or similar....

even if you did get it sandblasted that wouldnt guarantee that something wont bloom to the surface over the next few months.....id save the money, take the risk, and if any little bits do carry on treat them aggresively then and there

And yes, next steps will be
sand
fill bits which have pitted if necessary
sand again
metal prep primer of some sort (everyone has their own opinion on whats worth the effort here)
painty painty.

Excellent; thank you!

Can anyone recommend a rust prevention primer; not just to go over the surface rust but over the whole car?

Also what filler is the best/easiest to use?

Thank you

Depending on how much money you have you might consider getting that shell zinc dipped. That'd see it last quite well.
