Scenario -

You have driven into a small car park that serves your favourite coffee place. On driving around, you can not find anywhere to park because some ignorant and selfish individual has decided to take up 4 spaces (with their Mercedes SUV)!! OMG.

What do you do? Do you park so that car is blocked in? Do you leave in a rage and go to another coffee place? Or, do you as the "hero" in our story does - key the car down one side.

Is that a justified response to shockingly bad parking?

This was taken from another forum, I am interested in a PH'ers opinion.

This was not me and was another member of the other forum.

Not worth vandalising someone else's property over something that is annoying, but in the grand scheme of things so trivial.

no, absolutely not justified....you are making assumptions why it is parked there....there MAY be a good reason (broken down and pushed in/emergency etc etc)

Not justified in any way. If it bothers them that much leave a note or wait for them to get back and suggest they learn to park or buy a smart car.

This, the car is innocent.

Does it make any difference that the person who keyed the car then made a thread about it crowing about how justified they were and that they have struck a blow for freedom and justice?

As it happens, I'm not surprised that the car got keyed either, but it was the response the OP in the other thread received that surprised me.

It's certainly stopped people parking on the footpaths (something which I hate) in our village.

It did have to be explained to some people why it was happening though. Sorry to stereotype, but the typical SUV driving female probably wouldn't have any idea that she'd parked badly.

In the scenario the OP describes - keying the car is out of order.

As another has said you don't know how the car came to be parked like that - there might be a genuine explanation.

The only time direct action is appopriate IMO is when a driver continually parks in an illegal position, blocking the pavement, etc and even then I'd would use less destructive methods - stealing the balancing weights off the wheels for example. A trip to and a bill from Kwik Fit every week may make them think...

Linky to forum/thread?

I suspect it didn't go very well for the OP?

Well that parking is pretty damn selfish. But I would NOT vandalise it. However if someone were to pour a latte over the windscreen I'd probably laugh.

No. Unacceptable. Anonymously causing hundreds of pounds of damage to someones car just because they parked badly is not only complete cowardice, but just really really lame.

What goes around, comes around. I treat other people's property as I wish mine to be treated, no natter how bad a driver or a Parker they are.

Actually, the reason for my post is that it DID go ok, or at least no where near as bad as I expected.

The first page gives hope, and then it just, well, doesn't. It really does feel like the op got away with it very lightly. Until he posted his own location by mistake on page 5..lol

In any case, link - http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=23&am...

I'd imagine somebody who could reconcile keying a car with poor parking, should be able to reconcile murdering somebody with keying of car.
I wonder if they are looking over their shoulder.
