Recently sold my 1998 748, even though I hardly had a chance to use it this year.... I have decided I need a new bike,

So, my shortlist is, hang off for an 899, buy a high spec 848, or... and this is kinda what im swaying towards find a nice 1098S 8ish grand.

It wont be used as a daily, but I will commute if the weather is good, but the main use will be weekend trips and the odd trackday.

HD Edinburgh have a nice one for sale right now that kinda ticks the boxes for me and im keen to buy at this time of year and try to steal a bargain seeing as the weather will be stty until April!

cheers in advance!

until I get something I will just be missing this!

Supposed to be the sweetest engine of the lot - 1098 has lots of power but not too much torque like the 1198.

Smack on here has a black 1098S, but he's on hols at the moment.

I've been sniffing hard around 1198S's for a while now, but if you are not obsessed by power (which judging by having a 748, you are not), I reckon a late, high spec 848 is the best bet. They produce more power than the 996BPs of the late 90s and almost as much as the 996S/SPS/998, plus look absolutely awesome.

The 1098s are getting on a little bit now which may or may not be a consideration as compared to getting a modern 848.

Whatever you get, be sure to post lots of pics.

Lovely looking 748 BTW. The right colour combo lick

848 is a a great bike (ive got one) and youd get a much newer one than a 1098s. The 848 will be more powerful than the 748 you sold anyway. It also depends what you looking to spend as a 899 is £12.5k and a bit of nightmare to insure as its so new.

I had a 1098s for 4 years. 30k miles, commuting, track days and euro trips, never skipped a beat! Best bike Ive ever owned.

So much so that I keep looking at them thinking, wow, superbike bargain of the decade, Id love another one!

Cheers guys,

Power isn't really at the top of my priority list, the 748 was fun and handled really well on track, which is all I need to be honest, I have been on a rossi edition r1 and a stunning RSV factory R while having the power on tap was nice, I just felt I was going to lose my licence everywhere I went! I have also noticed on track that the little 748 was just as quick over a lap of Knockhill as the big bikes, I guess you are able to use everything on a little bike!

I did see this little gem for sale at Ducati Glasgow... http://www.motorcyclenews.com/mcn/bikes-for-sale/s...

Which I like a lot!

just was looking for some real life advice on these from current owners etc.

I think the draw for the 1098S is that it has ohlins etc.

I love that 848/1098 shape as its the first return to the old 748/916 style that I love so much!

I've just bought an 848 Evo on a late 62 plate, with 4k miles for not much more than the one you've linked to, although I have no idea how, especially as it was a Ducati main dealer.

get the 848 and fit an ohlin shock like mine. The ohlins forks arent brillaint on the 1098s (but look good) , and the standard showa are good once set up by k tech or simlair

Another 848 Evo owner here, without knowing your budget it's harder to advise. I can't get over how cheap the black/silver Evo Corse SE's are this winter (which I love), compared with the prices that the first SE's (which don't do it for me) were fetching last winter & hence I bought a standard Evo.

I'll play devils advocate here & say 899 as its supposed to be pretty spectacular on road & track & loads cheeper than the 1199, but real world similar pace for most riders & looks stunning IMHO (keep finding myself looking at them). Never did that with the 848/1098/1198.

Although biased (I had one) if you can stretch to £10k you might be able to find an early 1199 Panigale.

Thing was f'ing epic and I really miss it, got another one order to cheer myself up over Xmas.

It's not for everyone, but if you are a Ducati man you'll probably love it.

Obviously a nice 1098 with a set of Termi's and not too much carbon tat thrown at it should look the business - happy hunting!!

Happy new year all and thanks for your input!

I would love the 1199, but to be honest that's out of my budget, 7-8 is really the stretch of it and being realistic, its probably a bit more power than I need, im kinda verging towards an 848 at the upper scale of my budget with some nice bits, good to know that the showa shocks are good with a proper set up.

I would like to get something that I can use all of the power most of the time when on track etc.

off to search MCN again :-)

thanks!

How about a nice 749R? Easily affordable within your budget, and I happen to know of one for sale...

having had a 748 and loved it, I want a more modern and dare I say it more reliable Ducati,

don't get me wrong, I love the R, however, I fully intend on abusing whatever I do end up with and kinda want it to take more of a beating than my 748 did,

I had a few reliability problems with my 748, and to be honest, apart from electric niggles I think the rest was down to poor maint. by the previous owner, the last problem was the bottom end letting go at 14k miles - cannot be doing with that hassle again!

I think the 848 that Glasgow has is up my street, there are some bits on it I don't like, but it has the basis of a good bike. im pretty sure that belly pan would be getting painted red and the wheels would possibly be going gold... I love a bit of old school red and gold on a ducati!!

What sort of maintenance should previous owner have done to stop the bottom end failing at such low miles??

It's not as if you should pull out the shells, give them a quick going over with a toothbrush and stick them back in every service!

not at all,

just pretty sure the bike had been run dry of oil when I bought it....

the filter was loose, the 1st time I rode it the oil level dropped a lot, which lead to me finding the loose filter, the oild that I changed out of it had a bit of a burnt smell to it as i have seen in previous race cars I have run, and I gave the bike an oil and filter change before and after a track day and kept the oil level where is should be at all times.

I tend to find that anything that is run low on oil especially a v-twin, V4 or Subaru type boxer engine has a limited life span!
