Guess I might be the real old fart of the thread. Over 60, easily, got my bus pass. paperbag

Gamed for years, from the days of the Intellivision, one for the those of a certain age thread.

Lots of racing driving games over the years, golf eg PGA Tour, very few FPS, and hardly any MMO. Perhaps the first one networked was Doom over the office net after hours. Spent hours on Medal of Honor. Had a brief go on Call of Duty but no thanks. Like many others not prepared or able to spend sufficient time to become competent.

Mostly stuck with strategy or simulations, including Euro Truck Simulator. paperbag One I've spent most time on was Silent Hunter, various editions, a WW2 submarine simulation. Switched off all the arcade like help facilities and doing it like the old skippers, not having a device auto tracking targets and setting torpedo tracks, but having to observe, measure, time and plan attacks out with pencil and paper chart.

Then just as getting to grips with Dirt Rally, I fried my graphics card and never bothered again, just playing simple stuff on the tablet. Slither.io, virtual regatta offshore, PES Club Manager, oh and The Pirate - Caribbean Hunt.

As for MMO games, bits of dabbles, but as said by so many others the effort to become competent is too much. The only one given any time was World of Tanks, endured the first thousand or more of games when you are cannon fodder, but when they nerfed the tank destroyers and buggered up the maps just quit.

Having said all that, there is one MMO FPS that just getting into. PUBG Battleground on mobile. It's very cleverly structured so that you get a good noob experience. How they do it is being debated, bots vs clever player matching being the issue. I know that I'm fairly poor at FPS games, but finished 2nd out of 100 players twice within the first ten matches, and I am definitely not that good. Now up at level 16, so still a beginner but now once you are in the last 25 the players you are up against play like real players and not some bot/utter noob, so who knows. Had another 2nd and a 4th yesterday. Sometimes you still just die in the first minute or two, but matches last 15-30 minutes, and you can just dip in and out. Recommended.

If your mobile device is quick enough, try Real Racing 3. It's probably the most realistic racing game out there (although still not that realistic - it takes some effort to spin out).

Had a go at Real Racing 3, got sick of the stupid antics of some of the players, e.g. reversing off the start line into you, or deliberate barging through bends so you get the cutting corners penalty. In the end got to the point where you had to pay to make progress, sacked it off and uninstalled.

I play this too and never thought I ever would, it's just an easy relaxing game to dip in and out of whenever I have free time. It's also taught me how to use photoshop and I've also been teaching myself how to 3D model which is exciting... I drew one of the breather pipes out on it and had it 3D printed by a friend, not put it on the car of course but was an interesting project smile

In the same boat as the poster - not inclined to have the latest and greatest gaming rig/invest time and money in constantly re-building/upgrading to just be able to play the latest game (invairiably a re-hash of the original)

I played on the PS4 for about 3 years - but gave up as would have to do this late into the night once family had gone to bed (and I get up early for work)

I now only play gmaes on my iPad(s) - got the big iPad Pro when it came out - I play Player Unknown Battleground (PUBG) and Real Racing 2 (both online and standalone)

It comes down to been able to have a quick blat (max 30 mins) and then just put it down, come back to it later. I had 30 mins at lunchtime on PUGB on my work iPad Pro 4g ..... (ahem)

I'm also lucky to have an Arcade Bartop machine that I built - heart of it is a laptop - but fully wired up arcade joysticks and buttons. Allows me to indulge my earliest memories playing arcade games (Scramble/Galaxian/Moon Cresta etc) Also has a pinball emulator on there - but would be better if It had a 40" screen in portrait mode.

Maybe look at downloading MAME and finding some roms of games you used to play - I know for me they are invariably far better to play than todays latest and greatest game.s

Similar here.

Mid 40s. Always had games consoles about me going back to the original playstation and pretty much all the XBoxes, Nintendos and PS's since but lately i cant seem to find the motivation to play the games.

Bought a PS4 and a few games on offer in Tescos and GT Sport after a few months with no console but that was a fortnight ago and i havent even bothered rigging it up yet....

Games now seem overly complicated to "learn" so you end up taking hours if not days getting "in" to them. I've found it hard to find a game i can just play for an hour and enjoy then come back to again later.

Oh, I never got on with the online RR3 stuff. My phone is rubbish and people just blip about the place. Online Assetto Corsa on my PC is another matter. Love it even if I don't come anywhere close to first position. I know it isn't the same as real driving but there's something immensely pleasurable about bombing around a track in that Tatuus thing.

I played RR3 until I had to start paying, then started another challenge. The fun's in the driving, I don't care if I don't complete it.

Some interesting replies.

Having thought about it more, I’ve think I’m starting to realise the problem. I need games that are fairly easy to get into and play. Anything that is a slow burner is never going to appeal. Anything that takes too much learning, too. I need easily accessible and stuff that I can dip in and out of.

I thought I would like GTAV for example. Technically impressive I suppose but somehow I feel I can’t be bothered with it. I don’t mind shooters but Far Cry type games with all their silly crafting, and if you don’t do it quite right you end up in difficult situations woefully under-armed.

I don’t seem to mind stuff like COD to be fair and I used to play a fair bit of Unreal Tournament in my time.

I need to give car games more of a chance, possibly, and try some different ones.

I probably need to try some other genres again, too.

MAME is a decent suggestion. In fact I wish I could afford / justify an arcade machine, but I’m not sure it would get any more use, in reality.

One of my mates plays truck simulator. He seems to enjoy it despite not having wheel and pedals. I am struggling to understand the appeal personally but maybe i need to try it.

All in all i probably need to try something different, in any event.

I have an iPad Pro too so might be worth seeing if there’s anything on offer.

I like Battlefield because you can dip in and out, and as you rack up the kills, you unlock weapons and weapon upgrades (attachments etc).

One of the hardest things about getting older and gaming, is simply not having the time to become good enough. Unless you are putting hours and hours in daily it’s hard to become competent.

Yeah - against others, I realistically only play for an hour or two tops a day and can see other players jumping around me in FPS games meaning I will end up losing.

Yes, thats what i've been experiencing. Hard to find games to dip in and out of and that are playable without needing to spend hours / days becoming an expert.

Another hugely irritating thing - i've just bought a PS4 to play Gran Turismo Sport on and it came with God of War among other things as part of a package deal with Tescos. So i have a couple of hours this morning to kill and i thought i'd stick on God of War. Game took 20 mins or so to copy over, now its doing a 40 minute download before i can even start to play it. Hugely annoying.

I used to find it with the XBox One too - you'd maybe have left it for a while and had an hour or two and it insisted on doing an hour long system update before it would allow you to play.

Can only echo many posts on this thread - I regularly look through the games for sale on the xbox and NOTHING grabs me.

One of the big problems for me is multi-player. I don't really want multi-player, and I certainly don't want to be paying to join an arms race in one of the games. Some people are pumping far too much money or time in, getting all the kit and then wiping you out when you dip in. No fun at all.

Well after 40 mins wait time for the game to update and then 30 mins playing it, i dont thing God of War is for me.

So i've move on to GT Sport. Its telling me it needs a 4 hour update to happen before i can play the online part, which is the main game??

So in theory i've a day here to myself and i've got 30 mins gameplay in so far.

Can see the whole lot being sold off to musicmagpie or CEX before the end of the day...

fking ridiculous system. 4 hours to do a download before you can even start a game? fk that.

I feel your pain Berlin.

I tried to have a quick game of unreal tournament the other day. Only there was a 50 minute update to install. So I didn't bother. Lucky the game was free.

Same sort of thing with GTA. Every time I try and play it there's a huge update. And then when I do, I'm "meh" and switch off after about 15 minutes of pissing about not doing much!

Agree with others I don't have the time or motivation to invest in being good. What happened to simple games?

Haha, I noticed this when I installed GT5 on the PS3. Someone gave me a load of games but most of them needed some kind of update that took anything from minutes to hours. Ridiculous. The annoying bit was that most of the games weren't my thing so I spent ages waiting for nothing.

Well thats three of the four games packaged up to go to CEX and the console on gumtree.

Will probably let this GT Sport sit here and download then try it. Cant be bothered with these 3-4 hour waits for a game i dont even know i'll like. Ridiculous setup frankly.

Interesting thread.

I am 46 this year and like many others here have found myself spending less and less time on games.
One of the most frustrating things are the constant updates. When I do find myself with 30 minutes and fancy a game of world of tanks. There is the inevitable operating system update followed by a 2gb patch for the game.
I leave it to download thinking “I’ll play it tomorrow” then I can’t be arsed or don’t have time.
I then go through the same a month later.

I have found a small glimmer of sunshine with the Nintendo switch and enjoyed The recent mario game hugely.

I'm off today with nothing to do and had set aside pretty much the entire day for game playing on this new PS4.

Unboxed it at 08:00, its 11:35 now and i have had 30 mins game play so far and i've to wait another 84 minutes for the GT Sport download to complete, so 13:00 before i'll be playing the game i want.

Wouldnt care if i could go in and root about in the game while its downloading but it says if i do that i "skip" the download.

Rubbish system.
