Perhaps the 'payment slip' should be written in a childlike manner in orange crayon?

Oh no; It's got to be more professional than that.

Well I've been and paid the money to Diplomat Dave and sent him and email with a previous suggestion

============

Diplomat Dave,

I've been to Moneygram to transfer the money and it's been done.

The transaction number is 69363841. However the guy in the moneygram office advised that now due to the UK leaving the EU there is a 24 hour delay on transactions from the UK to locations in Europe. That's why he's highlighted the pickup time as being tomorrow 11/4/17. He says to advise you that any attempt to pick up this transaction before then will flag it up to the EU authorities with the potential that they will put a hold on it for a further 24 hours. He did say that a couple of people had been caught out last week with it.

If my printer is working again I've attached the scanned receipt as requested.

Regards
Steve

Should have sent him a receipt, photoshopped in the same font and style as his "custard" pic!

How about:

"My Wife was visiting Madrid so decided to save you a trip by collecting the cash herself and giving it to you when you both go to release the money box. Unfortunately she was unsuccessful and now 'The Authorities' have delayed the transfer for 48 hours as I expected. I am very angry with my Wife and have spoken to her on the telephone and said some very harsh words to her. Now she will not speak to me."

That should keep him on the hook for a while longer.

Then after a day or so:

"I hope you have managed to collect the funds I sent as I desperately need to receive the money box. My wife believes I want the money in order to start a new life with my girlfriend. As a good Christian, I have assured her that this is not the case but she doesn't believe me and has now started divorce proceedings. She wants my house, my beautiful daughter "Chardonnay-Prosecco" and half of the cash in the money box. Please help me resolve this problematic situation"

All going brilliantly OP. As someone who works in telecommunications, could you not set up a premium rate line for him to call you on? Lure him in by saying you'd like to transfer a bit more money to thank him for the 'kindness' he's shown you but you'd like to speak to him in person to thank him. You know he's a busy man in the field, so he can call you at a time to suit him rather than you calling him.

I once had someone try this scam on me in person.

Someone I once knew at college phoned me and said he knew another older alumnus. This chap had come into a large amount of money and wanted to invest it but didn't know where to start. As I am in the investment line, could he come in and chat about how to invest it? I was reluctant, as I am not an investment advisor but, as a favour, I said I'd see him just to put him on the right track.

The older chap came in and was a real Walt. He'd been the first person to bring duvets to the UK and had set up various businesses. Then he talked about, how at college in the 50s, he'd been friendly with a lovely girl, "a darkie but very charming" (!). Anyway, she'd gone back to Nigeria and married someone who'd gone on to become President.

At this point I'm thinking, "this isn't going where I think it's going, surely?".

But it did.

"She has recently died and left me $20mio but I just need to get the money out of the country." Fees, etc.

I told him to get out, reported him to the Serious Fraud Office.

Not unsuspected but I figured it might go like this. So I shoot of Dip Dave an email seeing if he's tried to get the money out, followed up every couple of hours sounding more concerned

=======

Diplomat Dave,

Do you have any idea when your accountant is going to collect the money today - I'd appreciate being advised that it's been received.

Regards
Steve

=======

Dave,

Sorry to chase you; just seeking confirmation that your accountant has received the funds. The 24 hours is up now so should be good to collect.

Please advise if you've received the money.

Regards
Steve

Knowing full well, as soon as he got that number yesterday he was going to go down and try and cash it or he saw the badly scanned image he knew he'd been played. Either way, I decided to get him down to the money gram anyway.

I dropped George a note sounding concerned about the lack of progress

====

George,

It's been two hours and I've not heard a thing from the diplomat. Have you heard anything.

I'm going to town this afternoon so will confirm with Moneygram about if it's been claimed if they can tell. I don't like this feeling of not knowing what's going on especially when all my savings are involved.

Steve

====

Nothing from either email address; annoyingly. So I send George this to see if he's still interested

====

George,

My eyesight isn't what it used to be and I incorrectly sent the diplomat one digit wrong of the transaction number - I've just sent him the correct number; the money gram folks confirmed it hadn't been collected yet.

Hopefully he should now be able to get the money now.

Regards
Steve

====

With this in mind I edit the numbers on my original 'receipt', and send Diplomat Dave the following to see if he'll bite

====

Diplomat Dave,

I haven't heard from your all day. I've went back to town to check if your accountant had received the payment but they've confirmed the money hasn't been cleared. There was an error the number I sent you which I thought you would have seen from the scan but checking my email to you - the scanner wasn't functioning correctly. I've rescanned my receipt.

Please note the number I sent you previously I had misread it - I said it was 69363841 but it is actually 69363341.

Please accept my apologies for my error.

Regards
Steve

I'm sure the forum software is still tit's up and the image isn't showing, nor is it bolding when it should be!. Open it in a new tab and it'll be fine.

So I'm really hoping he's had two wasted trips to the Moneygram office, annoyingly I don't expect to hear from him again.

I'll give him till tomorrow then I'll report the email addresses he's using.

All good things sadly must come to an end.
