Chartering an aircraft need not be any more expensive than a ship or a fleet of trucks.
Hmm, I find it hard to believe that the cost of hiring a truck or two of parts from a supplier in mainland Europe to deliver to a customer in Birmingham is equivalent to hiring a cargo plane, especially considering you still need to pay for a truck or two at each end to do the airport runs.

All the supplier has to do is despatch the manufactured parts by truck a day or two earlier. That’s got to be more economical than hiring a plane. Surely that’s just adding unnecessary cost to the supply chain?
It's not really a matter of "belief"; when a truck is more cost effective that's what happens, but when not the alternative comes into play. The cost of halting a production line for just one hour can run into many thousands of pounds, an aircraft can make the difference between profit or loss.

Thanks, had a look and it was probably a mirage 2000, it appeared slow compared to the other aircraft flying around, the rest were having a lot of fun pulling high g turns whilst accelerating and making lots of noise biggrin

Yep, there’s been loads of helicopters landing at Carlisle airport, in one case (can’t find the picture, was on local news) in full ‘Vietnam’ formation.

Morning all. I am currently in Chartres, doing the tourist thing at the cathedral. We keep hearing aircraft engines overhead, doing some kind aerobatics, but being in the city haven't been able to see.
Now i have just heard the unmistakable sound od a Merlin, and in the distance i have seen the equally unmistakable sight of a Spitfire, pretty certain with D-Day stripes on wings, performing a dive manoeuvre.
Its now gone, my flight radar app is showing nothing, does anyone know why a Spitfire would be performing over or near Chartres in Northern France? Tia. smile

An unusual visitor.

I think it is a Swiss company that does our helilifts and we have just taken the temporary tower down at Emley Moor.

OMG I would love to see that! I've found the answer though, there is an airshow on at Chartres aerodrome. There has been the odd other plane overhead but nothing I recognise or looks particularly exciting. Would bloody love to a Ju52 though, you'd think they'd have the courtesy to fly over the city. smile

…and a pair of KC-135’s from Mildenhall that went out earlier are now returning. Seeing as there’s 2 of them I suspect there’s some form of escort with the E-4.

The "escort" is simply airborne refuelling. It is going Edwards to Djibouti and is refuelled 3 times enroute. First refuel was States-side before the Atlantic crossing with FLAM11 and FLAM12 then refuelled again off the Portguese coast with RAKE75 and RAKE76 from Mildenhall , then refuelled a 3rd time in Falcon East corridor from RAKE77. I've no idea why a B742 needs to be refuelled so many times. Even if it's flying at max weight with all the kit inside it should be able to make US east coast to Djibouti with only 1 refuel imo.

Keeping it topped up just in case?

Maybe it’s always operated like that on a long run?

Slightly counter to the thread title - 3x helicopters flying over the Cotswold in low level formation, but not appearing on any ADSB tracking site. All appeared to be Eurocopter Dauphins in a matching dark paint scheme.

Aren't they the chopper of choice for the SAS? Probably wouldn't want to be broadcasting their location

We got buzzed by this in Yosemite today. There is reasonable commercial air traffic here, but this thing came through low & fast, and made everyone look up!
