What about that strange turd botherer, Gillian McKeith.
IIRC, she used the prefix Dr. but was subsequently found that this was a result of a one week distance learning course from some obscure American collage and had zero medical weight whatsoever and she had no right to use it in any UK professional context.

The funniest bit was that I assumed her ‘turd bothering’ was as a result of her medical specialism. It wasn’t even part of the week long online course though.

Just read this thread all the way through, as I’ve only just come across it and found it interesting. Some of the names mentioned matched my thoughts.

They Think It’s All Over….. was always a favourite of mine. Nick Hancock, who appeared to be on everything at the time, probably best otherwise known for Room 101. He was great. His niece was the year below me at school. Lee Hurst left that show after the first few series and didn’t appear much on TV after that as far as I remember, but has remained very active on Twitter. Quite outspoken/opinionated. Rory McGrath stayed on the show and stayed on TV quite a bit longer, but I haven’t seen him for ages. Again, was quite active on Twitter. Haven’t seen it mentioned, but in the later days on TTIAO, Lee Mack took over from Nick Hancock as the host. Probably his first notable TV role. I really like Lee Mack now, but at the time Nick Hancock had big shoes to fill in that role.

In January 2002, I went on a school sixth form trip to Paris to attend some kind of EU Conference open to students and that was presented by Philippa Forester.

Dave Benson-Phillips is very active and available to hire for events and does a lot of shows. Not TV work, or at least I haven’t seen him on TV. Very active on Twitter.

Pauline Quirke doesn’t do as many TV roles as she used to, but runs the Pauline Quirke Academy, who have base near me.

As has been mentioned, Jasper Carrott is very astute and invested heavily in the production company that created Who Wants to be a Millionnaire? Has also invested wisely elsewhere and Golden Balls was also a big earner for him. and is worth megabucks now. I loved his stand-up work and stuff like Canned Carrott and The Detectives.

As someone else mentioned, Sarah Greene was quite recently on Richard Osman’s House of Games and looked amazing for a woman in her 60s. Melinda Messenger was also recently on there.

Andy Crane is a good shout from my youth. Think he’s busy with production work and possibly also radio.

Bob Mills is very active on the radio.

Steve Penk was always very highly regarded in terms of production and was well-liked as a warm-up act for gameshows, but never quite had the star quality as the main host.

Lisa Rogers is very active on Twitter, but has been busy with multiple kids recently.

Neil Buchanan is another guy who was very astute and is now minted.

I always liked Matthew Kelly, was an absolute star. Brilliant stage/drama actor, which a lot of people never appreciated. At the time, you could never be sure, but never believed he was guilty of the allegations.

Paul Kaye (Dennis Pennis) seems to pop up in absolutely everything recently.

A name I didn’t see mentioned, but may have missed it was Nell McAndrew. Was thinking about her and how I hadn’t seen her in ages only the only other day, after being everywhere at one point.

Emma Wray hasn’t been in anything for years. Always thought she was an absolute star. Brilliant in Watching. Was also brilliant in Stay Lucky with Dennis Waterman, which was a great programme, which seems pretty overlooked these days. Also played a good one-off role in Minder and a small part in Boon. There must be others too. Have often thought that it’s a shame she doesn’t appear any more and would be great cast in something like Coronation Street and would be a cut above the normal bunch of soap actors.

Jimmy Nail is another one I’d love to see on TV more still, but he’s been active on stage and in production. I keep quite up to date with a group dedicated to Auf Wiedersehen, Pet as it’s one of my all-time favourites. Some of the main cast, particularly Jimmy Nail, Tim Healy & Kevin Whateley, being from the North East, are heavily involved in a charity show called “Sunday for Sammy”, which is a fundraiser in the memory of Sammy Johnson, who was a well-respected North East actor. He played the small role of Martin Cooper in Series 2 of AWP and went on to play the bigger role of Stick in Spender, alongside Jimmy Nail (also a great show, with a cult following and lots of Sapphire Cosworth content!).

Crocodile Shoes was also very good and Jimmy Nail also played a great part in an episode of Minder, albeit he struggled to prevent his Geordie accent from breaking out of his Irish Traveller accent on a number of points!

If I remember rightly, Lee Hurst suffers with arthritis and has sever neck back pain which made it increasingly painful for him to work and he reduced his TV appearances / workload as a result. He also runs a comedy club which was taking up more of his time. So you hardly see him on TV now. I think he also got into minor trouble with the police for smashing someones mobile phone at a gig.

Sarah Greene continues to run Flying TV - the helicopter tv company she set up with her late husband Mike Smith.

Yes, quiet outspoken ha ha.

He's gone down the same Covid denial road as Lawrence Fox, only without quite so much success, although he's be trying his hand at right-wing controversy for a while.

His twitter output follows the same incoherent, rambling, contradictory pattern as my Mate's does IRL when he has one of his episodes and stops taking his anti-depression meds. He says things just for a reaction and then wallows in the vitriol to feed his self-loathing, My Mate, not Hurst although I wouldn't be surprised if it's true of him too.

Yes, it's difficult to swallow what he did.

As far as I am aware, it was an isolated case and don't remember anything coming out about him doing anything like it before, so hopefully it would have at least some kind of explanation.

I think his only small glimmer of hope of resurrecting his career would be to tackle the issue head on and make a programme all about what happened and how, hopefully, he's reformed now.

That's probably not a bad idea, I don't expect C4 will want to pick up "Bring back..." 10 years later on the back of his muddied reputation. The truth for him is that there's lots and lots of talented people looking for their first TV / Radio job that don't come with his baggage and it's been so long that his former fan base is gone. A warts and all docu will probably be a better draw than "bring back Miami Vice".

His cause wasn't helped by the way he refused to accept the verdict. I'm sure if he'd shown remorse then and there, and then got help (which he did anyway) he might have weathered the storm.

I'm sure Rory McGrath got done for stalking an ex girlfriend or something and that put the end to his career.

Talking about Jimmy Nail - my boss at the time and I traveled up from London to Newcastle for a meeting the next day, and ended up in a few bars the night before. We had a drink in this one rather dingy very "local working men only" type place and the jukebox - I kid you not - was 80% made up of tracks from Jimmy Nail albums. The only place on Earth where that would happen. Clearly he was/is much worshipped up there.

The drinks were crazy cheap - but the lager was so gassy, my boss (ironically a far more regular drinker than me) felt pretty ill the next day while I was fine. hehe

In May 2013, McGrath assaulted two people whilst intoxicated, leaving one person with a bloody nose and scratches. He received a caution.

In January 2017, McGrath was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail, suspended for 18 months, for harassing a former lover
