Www.snopes.com - where urban myths are collected and digested and is where I send my dad to every few weeks when he tries to convince me of the latest wheeze........
Exactly this. My old man now has the sense to check first, since I started responding to each of his rage inducing fwd emails with the news that what he was sending to all his friends as gospel, was a well-known crock of st.

"But its on t'interweb int it? It must be true?"

I once knew a nurse who claimed to have been at the Hospital when Gere was brought in to have the gerbil removed...

To be fair, it wasn't that incident we were doubting smile

As to Snopes, I find it useful to point people to when they don't believe me when I say such-and-such a story is a myth. My somewhat overly excessive knowledge being gleaned from over 20 years on the internet/web/usenet and a lot of research )not just Snopes/mythbusters smile ). It's a hobby. That and dispelling stupid homoeopathy myths and bks - which is not a hobby so much as in my job!

Proper old-school myth that one, told to me round a campfire at cubs smile

I've been told a number of times of a bloke with a super powerful rifle/pistol, or even bow, at a shooting range that went through the target, the back wall, (strangely there's never any metal plate and sand in this range, like there is in every range I've ever been to) and right through a police car that was in the street. But fortunately they were very understanding and didn't press charges.

Don't forget the one about the Police officer in Wales/Scotland/East Anglia manning the speed trap who pointed his hand held Radar at a Tornado/Harrier/Jaguar/Typhoon/F-15/F16 to see how fast it was going.

He had a lucky escape because the 'Master Arm' switch was in the 'Off' position otherwise he would've got an anti-radar missle up the chuff.
That's a classic example of one that keeps getting the details changed. If every time it was told the it was the same police force and aircraft you'd think maybe more people would believe it. I never understant why people feel the need to change a couple of details on an urban myth and pass it on.
