I know a few. The most light hearted was this bloke who we used to smoke with when we were 16/17. Very dodgy guy, violent excon, drug addict, sleeps rough alot but went to the same raves we went to. Anyway he'd turn up in the strangest places trying to sell you knock off goods. A highlight was in the library where he suddenly turned up offering me leg of lamb from the inside of his trenchcoat in the middle of summer.

If you're talking about who I think you're talking about, books have been written. If it was done solely to piss them off, I'd say that was extremely ill advised.
I don't know the people in the books but I know someone who does, through my father. Let's call him Alex.
As an aside, the house I grew up in was situated about 3 miles from the Rettendon Range Rover murders and I saw and remember all the police activity in the area very well.
Now as adult, I can count Alex as friend, but at the time he was an associate of Tony Tucker, one of the blokes in the Range Rover.
Small world.
I was talking about Judas Pig, is that the book you're thinking of?I don't know the people in the books but I know someone who does, through my father. Let's call him Alex.

Although it is no secret who the characters in judas pig are based on.
Another family I have had dealings with were bailiffs and debt collectors. The father and his sons. Not one of them under 6'5.
Some travellers had settled on some land they shouldn't have and after trying the proper channels, the land owner contacted this family.
After watching them and learning their movements, they waited until the pie keys had gone out on their usual weekend piss up, and then went to the site and chopped up every caravan and motor home into little pieces with chainsaws.
I've seen the Polaroids.
You've got to be sure of yourself to go up against travellers, but honestly these guys weren't afraid of anyone and being family they would go further for one another (die for one another) than most they came up against. That always gave them an advantage.
In most situations in life, if you want to win, you've just got to be prepared to go further than the other guy...
Simple as that.
Next door but one, done for atttempted Murder
Ex ( now deceased)Fil, went to see 'some of his mates' at a pub near Stratford. Took the family with him for the 'good old days'. Nothing wrong in that ,but this was the only pub in Stratford open on Christmas night!!!
One of his friends wandered up to me and asked if 'I was Brendas chap?' said Yes, and he just said, 'We are all Harry mates here, just look after her, know what i mean?' And gave me that knowing wink. Never felt so s
t scared in my life. However i didn't and so far i havent been found!!!!!Always wondered about his East End roots and how he was alway party to a good deal hre and there
Ex school mate is/was in the legit arms business and has just been done for illegal arms dealing. It was all going swimmingly having sold 10000 assorted small arms to an Eastern European country, spent a lot of his time, visitng the far east and only got caught when he was done for trying to flog some Ground to air missiles to some unknown country, and laundering the money through his Vietnamse girl friends ebay account. seems like he owned half of Essex near Stanstead, the pile look quite big on google view.

No, I'm talking about books by another crime author. The people I'm referring to are mentioned in a couple of his tomes.

Ah right, those books. I'm a bit confused, is your friend 'Alex' the author or someone in the books?Although it is no secret who the characters in judas pig are based on.

Unfortunately, I have a couple of older family members who have always been on the dodgy side of things. One is currently being investigated for fraud, we estimate to the tune of hundreds of thousands. The other has always lived the more sinister life, drugs, drink, 'gangster' type of person. I saw a lot when I was a kid, things you pretend you don't see and cast to the back of your mind, but these memories sometimes draw themselves in as an adult and explain a lot of what happened in childhood.
Both of their lifestyles are now catching up to them in the their 40's and they can struggle with the day to day life mentally.

Went to school with this guy. He had a reputation at school but I never had any problems with him. He turned up at a tennis competition and I didn't really put my heart and soul into trying to win. He is now serving life for a shooting.

'Alex' is a man who has been a close long term associate of the main family in the some of the books, who moved from East London to Essex and as such came to become a friend and business acquaintance of ours.
When my close relative was facing numerous firearms offences and counts of assault, Alex put us in contact with the legal team that operates for the man who runs the family Alex worked with/for, who has had legal troubles in the recent past.
Without going into too much detail, I thought my relative was bang to rights. He'd been grassed up and arrested by armed police, and weapons and other things found. Cut a long story short, but thanks to this legal team (and fortunately having the funds to retain them in the first place) and some incompetence by the investigating force, my relative walked.
Its not what you know, it's who you know.

I knew this guy, very quiet, used to sit in the pub, have a couple of pints. Chatted to him about once a week over a couple of years. Really quite ordinary and unremarkable. Lived about 1/4 of a mile down the road in a little terrace house. is only real interest was his annual diving holiday in Thailand.
One day he became headline news.

When I was younger I used to knock around with a chap who, although I knew him socially, was more a friend of a friend. He got into a fight with a squadie in the local pub on a Saturday night and just lost it. Beat the guy to death.
Said squadie was the fiancé of one of my other friends (and part of the same group's) sister.

Some of the stories in this thread are fascinating, if a little disturbing!
I know plenty of dodgy guys from the forces, but I think that's a given with their line of work.
This lad I went to school with was a nice guy, but had a lot of problems. From a good family, with plenty of opportunity he just seemed to always make the wrong choices and do the wrong thing. I remember wondering what he'd end up doing when he left school, knowing he'd be in trouble somewhere along the line.

I also stopped a car once for having a dead headlight, the driver had several convictions for illegally disposing of a corpse to obstruct a coroner. Very calm, well spoken man but sent shivers down my spine. Very dodgy.
