My brother house sat for one of my mums friends for a few weeks when they were on holiday. This was about 10years back. I was 21 and by brother 27.
It's an odd house and nobody we know actually likes being there. It's a mismatch of very very old farmhouse/Inn that has been extended multiple times in its history (but not in the last 100yrs or so). It's drafty, odd layout, all the rooms are massively different in temperatures/humidity and there are multiple levels to each floor
They had two dogs. Whenever they were in the house they seemed on edge and anxious, never really relaxed. This could well be to do with temperatures and air pressures in the house as I know dogs are highly tuned to this.
I offered to stay with my brother for a few days for company. He didn't really like being in the house.
I'm not in any way a believer in the paranormal at all. I think its a load of horses
t. I'm an engineer and a very logical person. However over the three/four days I spent there, there were a few odd things that even I could only put down (to me) as logically "unexplainable".
1- The light on one of the upstairs corridors had two switches. One switch in the master bedroom, and another switch at the end of the corridor by the stairs. They appeared to be wired independently so that if you turned the light on in the bedroom, you had to turn it off from the bedroom. Same for the one at the end of the corridor.
Both myself and my brother were staying in guest rooms, but on two occasions the light was turned on from within the master bedroom. Neither of us had gone in the master bedroom and the door was closed so no chance it could've been one of the Jack Russels.
When downstairs we also thought we heard footsteps down this corridor but I'll chalk that down to "old house creaks and groans".
2- One night my brother was getting ready for bed, went to the loo and brushed his teeth and as he walked back across the room he stood on the bath mat. It was cold and wet. Absolutely soaked through, like it had just been dunked in water.
He called me and we threw it in the bath. Looked for a leak, couldn't find anything. Dried up and mopped down and still couldn't see where this water could've come from. Felt the ceiling in case it had come from above. Nothing, dry as a bone, even the light fittings. No signs at all where this could've accumulated such a mass of water. We went to bed confused and when we checked again in the morning there was still no sign of where the water could've appeared from.
(We both used the seperate shower cubicle, the bath wasn't used whilst we were there and there was no over bath shower)
3- I was a uni student at the time and was doing some last minute late night work. I was in the kitchen sat at the table with one dog by the aga and my brother was in the living room with the other watching telly. It was a pretty blustery evening so the house was generally being a bit noisier and draftier than normal and the doors were rattling a bit etc.
Both dogs welped and ran into the utility room and into their cage and whined and barked, not massively unusual but something obviously spooked them both. I looked up at the door from the kitchen into the boot room/entrance porch which was rattling a bit and saw the latch lift off the hook and the door gently swing open.
I tried the next day for about two hours to replicate the same scenario whereby rattling the door or gentle pressure could lift the latch enough to clear the hook but I just couldn't get anywhere near, it was stead fast...
4 - My brother claims to have had another seperate experience in the house when I wasn't there a few days later. Causing him to pack up his things and the dogs at 2am and drive to my parents house. Going back to check on the house during the daytime with my mum. Since then he's never been in the house on his own and won't stay overnight there.
He claims the kitchen door opened (like it had to me) but this time it flung open and something pushed him hard in the chest and he fell back over the aga, with the pans on the ceiling mounted rack all clanging like someone had run a stick across them.
This I'm much more sceptical of because I wasn't there to witness it and thats not just "weird" or "unusual" - that sounds paranormal, which I've already established is horses
te.
Having said that, it's clearly affected my brother who's normally a fairly reasonable and rational person. He still goes on about it to this day and is convinced at some point in history someone was shot in (what is now) the kitchen.

Ok, not really, and this maybe isn't the thread for it, as it was a dream I had, not something that happened while I was awake.
But I had a dream a few months ago, my wife had to wake me up as I was spazzing all about the bed, but in the dream I was in my house, and something else was there. I saw it, and was paralysed. I can't describe what I saw, although there's some sort of image in my head still.

For the next couple of weeks, every time I thought about it, my skin would crawl, I'd get shivers etc. If I thought about it before bed, I'd struggle to get to sleep.
Freaky.

I thought for a minute or so that all of thewarlock's postings on the thread had disappeared - as well as his username not showing up in the member search - but turns out I wasn't using the 'inner third eye' mode in Chrome.
My parents live in what used to be an old working farm back in the 1600s. It's long since been a working farm, but their back room downstairs used to be part of the original farm. The dog will happily wander around the house but will never settle or walk straight in to that room. She'll often just stop at the door before walking in, or often just sit and lie at the door. On the odd occasion she does go in the room she's always restless. Quite often she'll be lying down but suddenly jump up, hackles raised, staring at the corner of the room, sometimes growling. She's a very placid labrador, so very out of nature for her.
Turns out back when it was a farm one of the farm workers had killed themselves in that room (or barn, as it was back then).
More recently, and this is probably nothing more than just freaky coincidence, but my grandma passed away in hospital last year. My mum got the call to say it was looking like she was going to pass so she went over to the hospital. One of her favourite songs is 'Together in Electric Dreams', by Phil Oakey. She said it was on the radio just as she was pulling into the hospital. A few hours later my grandma passed, and the song that was playing on the radio on the hospital ward at the exact time she went was Together in Electric Dreams.
A few days later at the funeral we were following the hearse to the crematorium, radio turned down, when I noticed the display...' Now Playing, Together in Electric Dreams...'
Another few days go by and I'm at work on a site visit and get pointed towards the office where the fault is that needs to be fixed. 'There's no one been working in there'. So I walk in and notice the radio is playing on one of the PCs. Odd, I thought, considering no one has been working in there. I sit down and just randomly think about my grandma and how coincidental Phil Oakey playing on the radio is when I suddenly got a shiver down the back of my neck, just as the adverts on the radio finished and Together in Electric Dreams started to play...
I'm not saying my grandma was post controlling Smooth Radio's playlists from the afterlife, but it was all a bit too coincidental.

Earlier this year, on my way home from work I found a cyclist lying by the side of the road.
Phoned 999 and explained he was not breathing and had no pulse. Despite CPR from two doctors who lived locally and were also just passing, he sadly died a few days later. The cause of death was a massive heart attack.
A few weeks later I was on the escalator in Tesco (oddly specific, I know) and I felt a massive sharp pain in my chest.
Seconds later the mother of the man who had died phoned me to say thank you.

I have three... not particularly creepy... but unusual.
The Hitchhiker
In upper 6th I worked in a local nightclub. On Christmas Eve 1988 I was returning home after work at 2am, alas my car broke down half way so I resolved to walk the remaining 3 miles home. I hopefully put my thumb out to the very few passing cars. A chap stopped for me, I vaguely recognised him as being a few years ahead at school. We had the craic and he dropped me home.
5 years later
I am returning home from Uni, late on Christmas Eve... same stretch of road.. I see this chap hitchhiking... I stopped and it was the same chap who had picked me up.. 5 years before... I dropped him home..
Second one
BMW 730i E38
One of my most succesful buy blind purchases... I bought for a charity banger rally... it turned out to be immaculate so I kept it as an Airport car for a few years. I was the third owner... only on leafing through the service history, I was a little confused, everything was in my name. The first owner and I shared the same Forename & Surname.
and the third...
The Exorcist
My parents moved us over the the Lake District in the 1980s and we moved into a big old stone house. For the first year... everyone saw something... and I don't know whether it was mass hysteria or what... my siblings & I were teenagers... my mother, a self professed psychic. My father however was a realist and nothing phased him. Then things went a bit weird ... he went to the garage one night (an old milking shed) and came back in white as a sheet claiming there was a cow in the garage. We all went to see but no, there wasn't a cow in the garage, just cars and tools. Then my little brother kept seeing an old woman, so he was moved to another bedroom... My sister took the bedroom as she didn't believe any of it... but now a few days later she also saw the old woman and wouldn't sleep there. I have to admit I saw something by the stairs... a shadowy figure with a pitchfork..
This all reached a cimax and my mother called the local vicar... he summoned his favorite Vicar friend who dealt with this sort of thing... an official 'exorcism' was scheduled and the two chaps went round the house and garage doing their thing with crucifixes and holy water.
It was all quiet after that... nothing ever happened again.

Another odd one.
A long, long time ago when cassettes were king as I child I used to record my voice, pretend to be a DJ etc. as I'm sure we all did.
Anyway playing back a recording once I got the most evil "voice" with growls, grunts and sounded like the devil. Most creepy and freaked me out for days.
I found if held down the FastForward and play button you could hear the "devil". It was the police! I think what happened is the fast dub and poor electronics picked up the interference and recorded that instead and then during playback it was slower and sounded creepy.

Great stories. I really like this thread - I'm very much a sceptic, but I would LOVE to be wrong and see or experience something fascinating. For me, one of the most unusual things IS this thread... (almost worthy of a mention on the thread itself? I think that would be like dividing by zero...) I find it fascinating how some people are overflowing with panic and desperation to get on here and solve/denounce/scorn a few harmless, random old stories. Hilarious!
At work working late - approx 1am, all the lights turned off, but all machines, radio etc still on.
Fumbled my way across the workshop to find the light switch switched off, flicked back on and all working again.
To get to the light switch you had to cross the workshop and enter the office. I was locked in on my own!
Has happened twice to me and once to another lad

Sleep Paralysis!
It's a really interesting phenomenon and most likely the reason behind things like night hags, succubus/incubus, even vampires!
It's basically the conscious part of your brain being awake, but not whatever bit that actually allows you to move, and often occurs with a feeling of trouble breathing, feelings of fear and even hallucinations.
I work with a guy who gets it quite often, and sometimes sees strange shadows and things. His mad sleep patterns and caffeine intake probably doesn't help.
I've experienced it myself a couple of times, once when trying some lucid dreaming techniques - which was particularly strange as I knew what it was. I was aware of my own breathing but couldn't control it, and neither could I open my mouth or roll over.
I had it another time which was more unexpected and it was quite frightening, I was trying to shout out to wake me up, but I couldn't, and felt really trapped.
It's easy to see how it could be behind all sorts of myths and legends

One night a few weeks back, I would wake from a bad dream, fall back asleep and have the exact same bad dream again, it was about being stuck in a house with some possessed mad woman of all things!
In one of the dreams this possessed woman was in that famous spider like position, you know, in the top corner of a room clinging onto the walls, anyway I wake up, I’m sleeping face down and have the absolute worst feeling of dread that’ this possessed woman is in this position in my room, I just could not move an inch, I remained stuck on my stomach for what seemed like ages. Couldn’t utter a sound
Dreadful

I had a similar experience when I woke up with what felt like a huge weight on me. I was night fishing on a lake in the middle of nowhere, on my own. I remember waking, or semi waking, feeling like there was a huge electrical presence in the woods behind me. I then couldn't move, there was a huge weight on me. Eventually I managed to slide off my bedchair and get up and out of my bivvy and shine a torch to see nothing unusual, but trust me it scared the crap out of me!
I've never been back to that lake. As you say there is no doubt a medical reason for feeling like there's a huge weight on you, but it's never happened to me again, thankfully.
I had an unnerving experience night fishing, I have fished 100’s of night on my own and only once have I been property spooked.I've never been back to that lake. As you say there is no doubt a medical reason for feeling like there's a huge weight on you, but it's never happened to me again, thankfully.
My friend and I were fishing a quiet lake called Church Farm, had done many nights there and we were doing well, he was able to fish mid week and I the weekends, we tended to fish the Same swim and keep the bait going in.
One evening up the pub he confessed that he had an experience he couldn’t explain, he took several weeks to tell me and only did because I was puzzled why he was no longer fishing the mid week there and he knew I would take the mick.
He told me he got woken up at 3am by the sound of something coming up the path touching each side of the path, it was overgrown with brambles and ferns. When you pushed your barrow up the path the sides would touch the foliage and make quite a loud distinctive noise, if you fish imagine an unhooking mat being pushed brushing the brambles.
This noise woke him up and he heard it come up the path over several minutes getting louder and louder. The path was probably 3 or 4 feet wide. He said he sat up and listened expecting a very early other angler. The noise kept coming and coming. When it got behind his bivvie it stopped, and never restarted. The path going forward was just as narrow and there was no where else to go. He sat on his bed chair to scared to look until sunrise then left, never to fish there again.
How I laughed and ribbed him. I fished there another 3 or 4 nights on my own then the exact same thing happened, I sat on my bed chair for 4 hours unable to bring myself to look and see what was behind my bivvie. I have never been back, no idea what it was.
It turned out the church had a big grave yard which was not very far from the swim, neither of us can explain it and would night fish there again.

Another one that comes to mind was easily explained. When I was a teenager I used to fish an old estate lake and although there was no night fishing we were allowed to fish from 4 am so you could get to the lake before first light, getting to the lake involved walking through the woods and a narrow track. Anyway one morning I got there at first light to find one of the regulars sitting on his chair, white as a sheet, shaking like a leaf as he tried to light a fag. It turns out he was walking along the track in the dark and walked into the side of a large deer, which had stopped on the track and obviously not heard him coming! Realising it was a deer after a couple of seconds hadn't stopped him from nearly s
tting himself for those first couple of seconds! I set up a Monzo account and the card arrived. There wasn’t a PIN so I’ve gone onto the app to find out what it is.
It was the same code as my old bike lock from about 20 years ago. The same number combination I have if I need to add numbers to a password.
Bit spooky I think. To the point I tweet Monzo about it.
Turns out you set the PIN during the application process which I had forgotten about.
For those few hours I couldn’t stop mentioning how weird it was.

Here’s another that was eventually solved:
As a kid on holiday somewhere in the country my parents pulled over to take a picture of the most incredible sunset. When the photo came back a few weeks later there was a leering, menacing face hidden in it. It was quite creepy and was a very popular photo!
Turned it was a reflection in windscreen of a cute goblin toy thing that when upside down looked horrid! I think I might have the photo somewhere…

Its strange how powerful the mind can be at pulling tricks on you.
As a young paperboy I used to walk round the village at silly o'clock in the morning half the year in the dark.
There was one street where a house had a wall in front of it, that then turned into a row of dense conifers. Just where the two joined there was a street light which was just about the only light source on this street.

Walking down this street one morning I was absolutely convinced, as in 100%, would have staked my life on it that there was someone or something crouched on the top of the wall nestled into the trees.
I must have stood around for ten minutes wondering if I should go back & take a different route, in the end I slowly approached on the other side of the road... eyes on the spot where I could see the shape... edging past slowly the shape melted away into the trees. I s
t myself and ran down the rest of the road.
The next morning I get to exactly the same spot & it's there again... this shape... just sat there... watching me, waiting as I approach.. and then slowly disappearing.
Of course it was just a trick of the light, the shadows, the tree and the lighting all combining to create a shape that to a 12/13 year old looked spooky and scary when walking the streets on your own in the dark.
And despite knowing there was nothing there, every morning I could still see the shape, and regardless of how confident I was there was nothing actually there it still made me feel uneasy!
Very easy to imagine what further tricks the mind can play on people who are half asleep or already in situations where it feels 'creepy' - a scary thing the human mind!

I experienced that once around 25 years ago when I lived alone. 'Woke up' but couldn't move. Felt like something was sitting on my chest. Probably lasted around 30 seconds. It's a really interesting phenomenon and most likely the reason behind things like night hags, succubus/incubus, even vampires!

Coincidentally I'd watched a documentary that evening about supernatural stuff and there was a section on succubi. Shows the power of suggestion on the mind.
Around 8 years ago I was living with a friend both in our mid twenties, typical lads pad, money to burn, all sorts of mad things going on and being consumed. Great fun but also pretty bad lifestyle to say the least.
I had something visit me one night whilst in bed, it was a blue glowing prometheus looking figure floating over me telling me that i had sinned for the best part of my life and to stop. I had the taste of blood in my mouth throughout this one minute experience of being told that i was a bad person and its not too late to change.
Afterwards I felt like a massive weight had been lifted from my shoulders.
Im the first person to dismiss anything god like and i was almost embarrassed to tell anyone at first.

I had a similar experience, three nights in a row, each one more frightening and more powerful than the one before. Almost as if a battle was taking place.I had something visit me one night whilst in bed, it was a blue glowing prometheus looking figure floating over me telling me that i had sinned for the best part of my life and to stop. This thread has just reminded me of something which happened when i was around 7-10, i cant remember how old i was.
i was pretending to shoot stuff with a friend, i.e. we both had pretend guns and headset walkie talkies, so could speak to each other in different rooms!top stuff
Anyway... my old family house was a massive Victorian terrace, which had a massive top floor/attic, including a library, junk room (full of old scary furniture), bathroom, gym and a playroom for me and all my toys. It was always cold up there, parents saving on heating bills and always dark plus aren't all attic's scary?
We were both slowly going up the stairs to the attic, checking for monsters to shoot or whatever we were hunting and suddenly the silence in the headsets was broken by the crackle and sound of a baby crying..... both looked at each other and absolutely crapped ourselves. From then i knew it had to be ghosts.
Obviously now im older.... must have been a baby monitor from neighbours... but as a kid... when i turned the lights off up there to come back downstairs, i always had to run down as fast as possible and whatever you do, don't look back! Argh haha
