I was rummaging around our car history folders earlier and found the original Autotrader advert pages. Some interesting prices.

^ I was just saying today that the good thing about the old printed Auto Trader was that if you fancied a replacement car, you could just browse through the "Sports and Performance" section and get a wide variety, and now you have to search by manufacturer on the web site.

And an Audi coupe for more money than an ur-quattro.

Lotus should be congratulated on this exceptional piece of aspirational juxtaposition for the 1990 Excel brochure.

Love the highly stylised style of these adverts, a similar thing done through the ages in the states to make the cars look more glamorous (may not be exactly the same model but you get the idea)…

When advertising speeds was allowed, even though they’re not that fast by today’s standards.

I’ve discovered a few copies of autotrader from 89/90. As you’d imagine a fascinating read ! Like you all, love my older cars and I look back and think why didn’t I buy that cheap exotic whatever.

Seems like the simple answer is our choice of cars 34 years ago was staggeringly dull and rather limited. Hindsight’s a great thing as escorts, capris, minis are everywhere for buttons. I have no idea how to post pics or photos otherwise they’d be well worth adding to this.
Not everything was cheap in 1989:

If you had £1.2m back in 1989 and kept it in the bank, it would be worth £2.8m today.

Had you bought that 288 GTO you may get £3.5m for it now (https://rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/mo22/monterey/lots/r0139-1985-ferrari-288-gto/1272912).

Meanwhile a property purchased for £1m in 1988 on The Bishops Avenue in London would be worth between £20 and £35m now....

Those brought back many memories. From scanning bottom right (ie cheapest) when I had no money, slowly moving up and accross to finally only considering the top left (most expensive) offerings.

Reproduced on the back of a restaurant menu. Caught my eye because my father had one and in the same colour - which Chrysler UK called ‘Seville’.

Brown chequered velour seats, too.
