I usually like point out on these threads that people are just being paranoid or thinking the whole world revolves around them.

Doesn't sound like the sort of car that would have anpr, and if it only expired a couple of weeks ago, fairly unlikely to even get pinged if it did have anpr, so you probably did something which got his attention

Or maybe the police's usual patrol route involves 2 laps of a supermarket car park, after all they might miss something going around once, but going around 3 times would be excessive, seems fairly likely, lot of people that might be using mobile phones in car parks which the cps might want to spend thousands trying to prove the car park was a road before eventually giving up.

Probably just checking you out. If you look young and drive a nice car, you can get followed a lot.... I certainly used to but sadly now when they see a middle aged bloke in a TVR they don't feel the need to follow........

Back in the day when I had just passed my test the local coppers in our area of Northern Ireland would follow me and my mates around often to wind us up as we were well known for our mischief.

Getting pissed of with this, one of my mates suggested we should follow them instead.

So one night, and after 30 mins of tailing the local village squad car (a beige Ford Cortina) around the village and then down a dark country road they slammed on the brakes and jumped out brandishing 357 rugers and a rifle.

The smell of ste in my wee Escort remained for some days after.

I've been followed very obviously once. Many many left and right turns and going well in the wrong direction to where I was originally travelling too proved that they would go wherever I went. It was very annoying and distracting.

Eventually I pulled up and was about to get out to ask what was wrong and they just drove past giving me evils as they did. Weird.

They probably thought they could smell donuts in your car.

ive had this

either one of two things

1) you look 'likely' and they are following u to get a reaction

2) youve done 'something' (brake light out, broke speed limit) and they are following you to see what else u do wrong, and if it makes it worth it

Probably got a higher priority call..

Similar thing saved me once when I got pulled over (in my old S2000!) and a call came over the radio and the officers had to leave half way through their checks. Although in my case, they didn't really have anything on me.

Had this once or twice, either they think your driving is a little dodgy and are watching to see what you do, or they're running anpr checks.

I get followed by cops quite a bit too (Also Bristol, but mainly south). I suspect, seeing a early 20's lad driving a 64plate RS Megane would raise a few eyebrows.
Usually get followed for about 5 minutes then get left alone. Never been pulled though.

A while back I had a panda Focus follow me through my local town and all the way back to my old house. I pulled into my bay, they watched, but as I got out of the car they drove off to the end of the cul-de-sac, turned round and went away without acknowledging me. Perhaps they thought I was someone else :-/.

Had a similar thing a few years ago, the car I was driving had recently been in a small accident on a roundabout, so one front wing and the bonnet were different colours and the rest of the car was half prepped for paint and it looked an absolute shed with various patches of primer and sanded panels. I was covered in sanding dust and wearing dirty workshop clothes. Was all legal though, all the lights worked, taxed, insured, MOT etc.

Saw a police car that was travelling the other direction do a U-turn and followed me for about 5 miles before going their own way. can only assume they were waiting for someone to check all the databases to check the car was legal?

They did this to me last year. To be fair i'd just briefly accelerated to about 45 in a 30 zone. They followed me home, went to turn around at the bottom of the street. He seemed to be doing this deliberately slowly so I just parked up and went into my flat. Never saw him again. I think he was trying to scare me, but why not go for the easy pull?

Somebody told me over the weekend that apparently they can't pull you unless they witness you speeding over a minimum distance - so for example you couldn't be pulled for accelerating up to 80mph to effect an overtake as quickly and safely as possible. I've never heard of this, so leaning towards it being a load of rubbish, but if it is true it may explain why you weren't nabbed for it.

I just remembered another time, again, in the S2000...

I was in a convoy with the other two cars in front (not really that obvious to anyone following). We were in Lane 1, the first two cars in the convoy pull into lane 2 to overtake a slower car.. I see a car approaching from behind in Lane 2 getting closer, so I drop a couple of gears and accelerate to match speed with the car in lane 2 and pull out in front of it before I get too close to the car in Lane 1...

Basically, I pulled out quite keenly (but safely) on a police car - I didn't see who it was because it was an unlit section of motorway! He followed me for a few miles until he eventually went for the overtake, pulled up alongside me looked over, then sped off and turned off at the next exit! I kept a look of ignorance on my face as though I hadn't clocked them and didn't look over. I was cacking myself a little!

I've heard the same thing from an ex-neighbour who was a copper. I think she said the minimum distance was 1 mile. I've not been followed in a while but I do remember on a previous occasion looking at my trip distance and watching to see when it hit 1 mile, just afterwards they pulled off and left me alone.

On the other hand, the last time I was pulled over (accused of jumping a red light which was false) they followed me, well tailgated me for about half a mile and then pulled me.

Who knows!

probably following no closer than others do in normal driving just your unusual attachment to the mirror and comfort deccelaration exacerbated it ...

also as has been reported trying to verify number of occupants, seatbelt wearing , use of phone etc ...
