This is the one thing I can remember form my SAC, good advice. If its a limit other than 30, there will be repeater signs every few hundred yards.
I'm not picking on Sam, just he's described it clearly. Also I hate to be That Guy, there's one on every PistonHeads thread so I guess it's my turn...

I learned this when I was 17. It's in the Highway Code, and I remember my instructor drumming it into me. Was I fortunate in my choice of driving instructor, or is this one of those things that people forget?

Also, I don't know when it changed but for other limits frequent repeater signs are no longer guaranteed and lack thereof is no longer a defence.

ETA I'm upgrading myself from That Guy to THAT Guy... biglaugh Seriously though, I hope you get the SAC option, I can't imagine that 37mph is exactly dangerous on that road if conditions allow.

Well sent my form off and got the actual letter today so that’s 3 points and a £100 fine ffs

One thing I don’t understand as I have the photo card why do they want me to surrender my licence to endorse it with points? Is there some form of chip in the photocard??? I could understand with a paper licence but don’t get it with photocards

Motorway? Rural road without streetlights? Seems to be good advice with a lot of exceptions.

This was a roundabout which always have street lights but aren’t always 30 and it leads directly onto a 50mph limit motorway and not in the city centre just on the outskirts

I genuinely thought it was 40 it is what it is I’m not too fussed would have rather done a SAC though

Thought you had already done one of those. You must have fallen asleep for the good it's done hehe

If it's a limit other than 30 or national, there will be repeater signs every few hundred yards. If there are no repeater signs and you're unsure if its a 30 or a national speed limit, drive at 30. When you arrive at your destination, give serious consideration to whether you should drive back or not.

Did you not read why I had to attend a speed awareness course?

Both myself and employer wasn’t aware that our movano should only do 60mph on a dual carriageway whereas I was trundling along at 70 thinking it was for the same as a car so in my eyes I wasn’t rly speeding just weren’t aware that our van should adhere to different limits

This time yeah was speeding but thought it was a 40

No repeater signs roundabouts are always lit and yeah no excuse rly I hold my hands up to it

Yes it worked as I don’t speed 99.9% of the time anymore just got caught this once which is s minor blip

I won’t be getting caught again anyway! Last time I had points on my licence was 2008 for 85mph on the M18 so don’t think I’ve done bad tbh

Are you being serious?

No streetlights = NSL (this varies depending on single / dual carriageway and type of vehicle being driven) unless there are repeater signs stating another speed limit. Whether the road is rural or built up makes no difference at all.

Motorways = blue road signs and if you don’t know you’re on a motorway, then god help anyone in your vicinity when you’re driving

Streetlights, then it’s 30 unless otherwise stated on repeaters. I know there’s an additional piece around the distance streetlights need to be apart as a maximum, but this will be met

Again though as this was a roundabout there’s always streetlights and there’s a lot out there with different speed limits, I encounter quite a lot that are on a 60 limit road on this occasion I assumed it was a 40 and was wrong

You also don’t get repeater signs on roundabouts either

You get them on the approach. It can’t be as difficult as you’re making out, otherwise everyone would be caught everytime they go through there, or at least the first time. I doubt that’s the case. If you’re unsire amd it’s lit, then you should work on the basis it’s a 30. Then look for clues that it’s different, if there aren’t any readily visible, then it’s a 30.

Only 0.1% of the time? About 20 - 30 minutes a year?

Giving you a bit of a hard time, sorry, last time I got caught was in 1986 for 59 in a 30, 3 points and £60 iirc. 30 signs hidden in bushes and no street lights, I spotted the rubber strips just after the 30 repeater, nearly did a stoppy pulling my speed down a bit before the strips, then the copper jumped out from behind a wall and then back again when it was clear I wouldn't be stopping in time. He was surprisingly good about it and from what he said the 59 was on the lenient side.

Since then I have never broken the speed limit, 100% of the time*, honest, I have the clean licence to prove it.

* This may or may not only apply to places where my speed was measured.

This is why they have speed awareness courses! To educate those who are ignorant of the simplest of motoring laws!
Wrong. They are only there to make money
