MR2 MK3 PROJECT
Discussion
few month later several oil changes and 1000 miles its all going well.
only niggle, its had a noise from the thrust bearing since Ive been driving it.
The thrust bearing is a bearing that when the clutch is engaged pushes on the clutch to make it slip if you will, so the gearbox does not have power, although not really an issue they can be noisy for years. Its pissed me off, its a brand new part after all that work and seems to be the only thing I can hear !!
I really dont want to take the box back out again, never mind paying for more gearbox oil
this cheap fun project is starting to add up !! and Ive not been to a pub for months. Feck it ill leave as is for now.

couple month later with the thrust bearing noise still hanging around like a bad smell and a trip away in the mr2's organised over a year since the idea, i start to notice a noise when i apply power in gear.
That'll be the gearbox then !!! life's a s
t sandwich and its always snack time it would seem.
so box is looking kaput, at least i can replace the thrust bearing !!!
.
Few calls to recon my Box and im looking at 400 quid, god damn it.
Instead I use a breaker from the mr2roc.org forum who everyone seems to have good word for. My only saving grace is mines a PFL (pre facelift) mr2 and as such a 5 speed box, much less desirable than the later 6 speed which people retro fit. I'm not bothered by that so get a five speed box from a 40 odd tho car (yes really) for very little money
fitting and swapping !

the thrust bearing

new clutch replaced with new clutch !!

The trip was great fun, the hill passes seemed made for the MR two's.
The silver mr2 is currently much cleaner than mine or the yellow one, so on one road whilst he held back a little more me and the yellow one went a little harder. I suspect it was this hill pass (forget which one) that was final nail in coffin for my aging shocks. looking at them id not be surprised if they where original. on the way home my mr2 seemed to pull one way a little and just did not feel as planted.
When we finally go home a couple of days later i had a look to see broken shock one side and one with no oil the other. it must have had none judging by the amount coating wheel arch.
so next up:
Shocks and springs !

Wow, you've put a lot of effort into it.
You probably torqued the head up wrong (perhaps some debris in the thread or a bad head bolt) rather than the gasket being at fault.
What was the total cost for repairing the 1ZZ and what made you want to go that way? You can buy a decent engine for £200 so it seems a strange decision to me.

Nice project, Im about to embark on a refresh of my suspension as well - any part numbers/suppliers for the front gaitors/bump stops etc?
And cheap supplier for the KYBs?
Thanks.
I have a mate in trade and I could get KYB's cheaper on ebay than he could (he normally saves me money), the rear ones look to have gone up since my purchase. But i think it has a discount if you buy them all:And cheap supplier for the KYBs?

not far of the point when coilovers are cheaper, I just prefer a conventional setup for mainly road use.
Yeah... I bought mine for majority road use so Im thinking Tein/KYB despite not being far off coilover money!Mines burning a bit of oil so may need to sort that in the future.
