Watched this with my daughter after she raved about Tom Hardy's Lawless. She was gobsmacked, music, clothes, casting, all perfect. A piece de resistance from Scorsese, second only to raging bull for me
Casino?
De Niro was outdone by Sharon Stone and Joe Pesci.

Personally I'd go with Mean Streets. Yeah its flawed by its (too) rich dialogue but it's outweighed from the acting, production, music; a low budget film with the hallmarks that went on Scorcese's subsequent films.

Great film, genius when you think about it, there's not a likeable character in the entire film, they are all venal, greedy, amoral
knuckle-dragging thugs with nary a fibre of decency between the lot of them.

The despicable Pesci character getting some emergency brain surgery via a .38 slug is a great movie moment.

My younger kids (12 and 15) wouldn't shut up about bloody Avengers earlier this year so we did Goodfellas and Casino two nights in a row. My "you need to have seen this" movie choices are normally hit and miss with them but both went down very well! Followed up with Dog Soliders - three for three!

The best scene is De Niro at the bar smoking a cigarette to the music of Sunshine of your Love by Cream.

He's deciding whether or not the kill Mori, the wig salesman.

No words, just the expressions on his face. The brief look of the thrill of it, the raised eyebrow, the look of resignation... While Mori walks past without a clue of his death sentence.

One which was then postponed simply because he told a funny joke later that night at a card game.

Small margins...

I actually watched Goodfellas for the 100th time the other night and when Pesci walked into the room I actually thought they had edited the scene as I remembered plastic sheeting. This explains it perfectly!

Casino is good, but Goodfellas is way, way better.

Are you getting mixed up with American Psycho? Only that's newspapers and hip to be square.

Not to forget A Bronx Tale.

Goodfellas is the best of them all though, for me.

A Bronx Tale is superb, Donnie Brasco is terrible however, IMHO of course. I made the wife watch the Godfather trilogy a few years ago and was amazed at how enthralled she was by them. Almost as amazed as I was by just how bad part 3 was, like a bloody made for TV movie!

I reckon Copland is worth a shout mind you, it always gets left behind for some reason.

State of Grace is often overlooked in the gangster genre, Penn, Oldman, Harris all amazing.

Not in the same class as Goodfellas of course but Carlito's Way is a good watch.

Once Upon A Time in America is pretty damn good as well.

Godfather 2 probably my all time favourite and the only sequel I rate above the original, even if by a tiny margin.

Miller’s Crossing is also a worthy gangster film. Doesn’t have the glitz of the NY mob films but, being a Coen film, has a great plot and some likeable characters. The scene where Albert Finney almost gets caught short at night is fantastic.

LOve MIller's Crossing (along with Fargo and NCFOM), one of Coen's lesser known films.

Made me think of gangster films.
The Outfit is good
as is Charlie Varrick

Taxi Driver and Heat wasn't bad either. Same goes for the Scarface.
