why are cherrybomb exhausts hated so much?

Besides, as everybody knows - real TVRs were all pre-cats... ????
Its not the de catting. That gives a modest effect. Its removing / bypassing the silencer, or replacing with a cherry bomb that makes the big step up in noise. That's what this thread is about. I mentioned de catting as it's almost always part of the process. My old 400SE was pre-cat and sounded much nicer than my Griff 500. Hence I was tempted with the de catting idea , but I just cant find any 400/ 500 de cat videos where they have not also sleeved the silencer, removed it or cherry bombed it. Which put me off. Way too loud. Imho.

Because they are are always fitted to something with a small low displacement engine nobody's cares about
If I hear. A noisy exhaust I want to see a nice car when I turn around
E.g lambo high end Audi arbarth something sporty not a clapped out Corsa with a body kit on

Proper US made Cherrybomb (or Smithy's etc, etc) glasspack mufflers give a proper old 60's style sound to a proper engine......

They make a car sound faster (to some extent) but rarely make it actually faster, that's not going to go down with enthusiasts of performance, they make a load of noise are are generally illegal, that doesn't go down well with those who are not motoring enthusiasts.
And yet almost all modified cars have a replacement exhaust that is louder, and often contributes nothing but extra noise. Some cars even have that ability as standard with the bypass flaps in the exhaust, sport modes etc. Most people, if they are honest, would admit that making your car louder makes it more fun to drive. Many are too silent as standard, especially newer cars with sporting aspirations. The exhaust noise of a Lambo or Ferrari, or even an MX5 or a Fiat 500, contributes much to the appeal. We can't all afford a Ferrari so we make do and modify what we do have.
Proper petrolheads understand this, and have probably done it too.
Sadly PH is now filled with a lot of people who have disappeared so far up their own backsides that they have lost all sight of what makes cars appeal to people.

Do they still exist? I haven't seen, heard or heard of a cherry bomb for years.

Hence why TVR is one of my favourite marques because they all make a nice(loud) noise. I've had two V8 Bmw's and you couldn't even hear the exhaust when you were driving them.

Cherry Bombs related to currently are not the 'real' thing - same as Thrush Mufflers.......poor facsimile of what once was 50 years ago.https://cherrybombusa.com/glasspack-mufflers.html

I agree with all of this! Its easy to turn your nose up at someone with a loud, sProper petrolheads understand this, and have probably done it too.

t exhaust, but ultimately it is more fun to drive when you can hear it. Granted its annoying for others, but who can honestly say they cared about that when they were teensRogerDodger said:

I had just the cherry bomb system, not loud enough, added Clive Y. Nice, but still a bit tame. Removed pre-cats, just about perfect. My old 400SE was pre-cat and sounded much nicer than my Griff 500. It’s not that loud compared to the likes of a chav’d up Audi fart box, and unlike anything modern makes real pops and bangs on demand

When I was looking to buy my 370Z I didn't want one that was standard for the reasons you mention(far too quiet). It has high flow cats and a custom made full exhaust on It. It is a bit too loud to use everyday(it drones like mad and is very boomy), but it does put a big smile on my face(I love driving it) because the sound a car makes is one of the most favourite bits for me.

The 360 with a free flowing exhaust sounds lovely. Can be very annoying at 70 though Hence why TVR is one of my favourite marques because they all make a nice(loud) noise. I've had two V8 Bmw's and you couldn't even hear the exhaust when you were driving them.

To a point, but I soon found on my old mini that the big bore system droned on and on, and added little , if any power. I spent a lot of time trying to shut it up. I'll not deny at first it felt a little epic. Most people, if they are honest, would admit that making your car louder makes it more fun to drive. My 996 had the sports button for the exhaust - bypass valve. I found it embarrassing.
My mate has a TCR and when it's in full sports mode the exhaust note through the stereo is cringe and annoying after a short while.
I guess it's all about authenticity. We love the howl of a lambo V10 because we know it's a high revving powerful beast. The sound is it's heart, and a product of its function.
A "howling" hot hatch is just pretending and unecessary.

Who remembers the Peko Big Bore 4?!!
I'm embarrassed to admit I had one on an otherwise standard 1.3 Escort. Black paint, white hubcaps, 4 inch exhaust. What a pillockGassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
