Thanks all, plenty options to look at. Will most probably try the Lidl and Waitrose options first before dabbling in mail order stuff.
The Scruttocks one sounds interesting too, not sure my gums can recede much more laugh

We like this. It's available in some supermarkets: http://www.collierscheese.com/our-range/colliers-p...

Aldi do a Vintage Cheddar in a gold coloured wrapper, it stands up there with Black Bomber and Coastal.

Another vote for Godminster - the best cheddar I’ve ever tasted by some margin. It’s also available on the cheese counter in some Waitrose stores.

Oh and yes, the truffle version is fantastic too if you like truffle!

Yep, this is the one I was going to recommend - really packs a punch.

Godminster Vintage Cheddar:

Still the best cheddar I've ever had.

Snowdonia Black Bomber is good and often easy to find:

Another vote for Black Bomber

While I can't comment on their Vintage and Extra Mature cheeses (which is what the OP is actually interested in) but I'm rather a fan of Wykes Mature Cheddar, and just find myself hunting round every time it's sold through a different supermarket chain.

Another vote here for Snowdonia cheese Company - Black Bomber is awesome, but there Amber Mist is even better, same cheddar with a hint of whiskey

A lot of the extra mature/vintage supermarket cheddars I’ve tried seem to be little more than an exercise in packing in as much salt as possible.

Mmmmm, salty goodness. lick
Which reminds me, Waitrose own label Cornish Quartz used to be a favourite, made by the same people who produce Cathedral City.
Must admit to being a bit underwhelmed by Black Bomber; I'm not keen on the texture which I find a little soft.

Wookie Hole is my current preference, not sure how widely its available.
Came to post this. It's in my fridge at the moment and as someone who honestly loves cheese and goes out their way to find unusual and new ones it really is brilliant. It's probably the nicest cheese I've had in a long time.

Coastal cheddar is also lovely, Cheddar Cheese Co stuff is a bit over priced and not as good as you'd expect or hope.

It's the reason I like Wykes Farm. The Mature cheddar is strong, but not Vintage/Extra Mature, as you would expect, but not salt laden as I find both Davidstow and Cathedral City.

Not cheap but for special occasions it’s a must.

Dartmoor Jack, when first tasted I thought that it was the best Cheddar style ever.

Bit of a thread resurrection but Davidstow have 50% off some of their top cheeses until 3pm Sunday.

The 60 month Reserve is super and even better when 500g is reduced from £11 to £5.50 (+£3.95 delivery)

https://www.davidstowcheddar.co.uk/product/60-mont...

The 40 month Vintage is damn tasty as well IMO.
