Even my wife whose not the most dexterous at this kind of thing prefers the le cruiset waiters friend I bought her. Its a lovely tool that feels very "right" and lends a slight sense of occasion over the "training arms" types.

I have one of these and its been brilliant for years

I bought my In-Laws the plastic version for a Christmas present and that's also good and about half the price.

I have one, but I didn't pay that sort of money! Great corkscrew, haven't had a single cork I have had a problem with. And as a cyclist it is just cool.

How much was it in ye olden days? I think they just keep putting the price up as it's a ridiculous item and they know some people will still buy it. I paid £150 in 2020.

I've had mine for about 20 years. Paid about £80 IIRC. It's not great on really old fragile corks where I'll crack out a waiter's friend with a helical corkscrew

Chaps, I commend you for your responses. Many many thanks. I shall admit to going rogue on this one. I ordered one of these yesterday and it arrived today:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vinology-EC-DLX-Electric-...

In PH style, my first attempt was a 2013 Beaucastel CNDP. Impeccable manners from the corkscrew, and I have to admit the blue mood lighting was a joy to behold too. Second bottle for our guests was a screw cap but if this proves reliable and fault free then good news. For all other eventualities I have a draw full of waiter's friends to fall back on. Not literally of course.

This is more PH:

We've had one for many years and it still works like new.

My parents have had a tandem one like this since before I can remember and it's always worked perfectly, I like that it doesn't punch right through bottom of the cork like a standard screwpull, and no other bits to get in the way like a lever pull. I really should find one the same but I'm hoping I'll inherit my mothers when she decides to stop drinking wine biggrin

My parents had a very similar one. It finally died when the pull screw catestrophically collapsed one night

I've been converted to the pump type. Quick, easy and fun!

This is the one I have

Ordered one of these over the weekend and tried it out on a nice bottle of Malbec last night. It's good fun and very effective for less than a tenner! A few pumps, and the air entering the bottle forces the cork out the bottle with a 'pop' like it's Champagne. I'm sure there will be a connoisseur or two lurking somewhere on the internet to explain why pumping air into the bottle is bad, but the wine tasted lovely to my common and uneducated palate. drink

My understanding of the pump type corkscrews is that they rely on the cork being the weekest point of the bottle. If there is a defect in the bottle it can explode in your hand.

I've always used a waiter's friend without issue. In fact we have a couple of Kikkerland ones that get regular use.

A friend pulled something like this out a few weeks ago when we were around at theirs, and it was a bit of fun to use. It also seemed reasonably foolproof too. https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Ivation-Corkscrew-Ergon...

Not a fan in the long term use of these compared to a waiters friend.
